Director of Creative Services (1414)

Position Summary

With wide latitude for independent judgment and under moderate supervision, the Director of Creative Services reports to the Executive Director of Communications and Marketing and designs high-profile multimedia projects while serving as Pratt’s creative director and providing oversight and guidance to the Institute’s in-house design and production team. The Director of Creative Services ensures that the Institute’s public website and all official print, web, and electronic marketing materials for the Institute are consistent with Pratt’s approved brand strategy and that they achieve the highest possible design and production quality in order to represent Pratt as one of the world’s premiere colleges of art and design.

Position Duties

  • Serve as the Institute’s creative director and manager of its visual identity
  • Design high-profile print and web jobs, assign other jobs to appropriate team members, and assemble appropriate project teams as needed
  • Lead a team of six full-time creative services professionals including a photographer/videographer, web developer, senior and junior designers, and client relations and production managers
  • Oversee design and production of all marketing materials and content (print and electronic publications, photography, and videography) ensuring that they meet quality standards and that they align with the Institute’s brand strategy, follow its visual identity guidelines, and convey appropriate key messages
  • Advise clients on how to meet goals through multimedia marketing
  • Develop and execute integrated marketing campaigns for specific initiatives including ad strategies that meet client needs while successfully promoting the Institute’s brand and supporting its strategic objectives
  • Work closely with the Executive Director to create brand awareness internally and externally and to develop marketing plans and general awareness ad campaigns for the Institute
  • Serve as the Institute’s visual identity authority and review all external layouts utilizing Pratt’s logo to ensure that they meet institutional guidelines.
  • Establish protocols to address unapproved logo use internally and externally
  • Maintain productive client relationships by ensuring that job intake meetings and design concept presentations are handled appropriately and leading them as needed
  • Guide collection of data and client feedback to assess if objectives are being met and to evaluate and improve results
  • Conduct and/or manage market research initiatives as needed
  • Maintain and develop departmental policies as necessary related to the intake, design, production, and delivery process
  • Implement a method for evaluating and assessing design and production process including project management tools to ensure maximum efficiency of workflow
  • Remain current in industry best practices in order to integrate new techniques and technologies as needed to achieve optimal results
  • Provide leadership and guidance to staff members by identifying group and individual performance goals and providing feedback at annual performance reviews
  • Establish benchmarks for measuring results over time and produce quarterly reports on departmental progress and accomplishments
  • Manage a budget related to operations
  • Hire freelance creative professionals as needed to supplement in-house resources
  • Perform all related duties as assigned

Experience and Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in graphic design required; master’s degree preferred

Experience: 7-10 years of relevant full-time experience and at least 4 years of experience as a creative team leader; familiarity with all aspects of print and web design and production processes; experience working for or in a higher education/non-profit environment a plus; combination of in-house and agency experience preferred

Skills: Demonstrated ability to plan, delegate, and coordinate team efforts in all related areas; excellent design and management skills; ability to juggle multiple tasks and priorities simultaneously; ability to meet deadlines and to address all situations with a calm and professional demeanor; excellent negotiation and interpersonal skills; track record managing staff and corporate branding efforts; superior interpersonal, problem-solving, and organizational skills; ability to motivate others and to complete multiple simultaneous projects within a high-volume, deadline-driven environment; proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite applications and all aspects of web design as well as familiarity with motion graphics, video/photo editing, SEO, and email marketing
