Position Summary: Postdoctoral Scientists for a) Modeling of Clouds, Convection, and Atmospheric Boundary Layer in a high-resolution climate modeling system, and b) Experimental Predictions of High Impact Weather Events using a global cloud-permitting model The Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences Program at Princeton University, in association with NOAA's Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL), seeks two postdoctoral or more senior scientists in the following two closely related areas. a) Modeling of Clouds, Convection, and Atmospheric Boundary Layer The World Climate Research Program (WCRP) has identified clouds, circulation and climate sensitivity as one of its Grand Science Challenges for the climate community. To meet this challenge, we seek to continuously improve the representation of all aspects related to clouds in its state-of-the-art climate models. The successful candidate will join a team of modelers and participate in the development of improved parameterizations of clouds, cloud microphysics, convection and atmospheric boundary layer in current and future generations of climate models. The candidate will also carry out simulations and analyses in support of that effort. b) Experimental Predictions of High Impact Weather Events using a global cloud-permitting model The successful candidate will participate in the development of a global non-hydrostatic cloud-permitting model suitable for both weather and climate applications, and carry out experimental predictions of high impact weather events such as landfall hurricanes and tornado-producing thunderstorms. The temporal scale of the predictions ranges from hours to seasonal. In addition, the person will participate in the frontier research of intra-seasonal tornado-outbreak predictions using GFDL's state-of-the-art global thunderstorm-resolving weather-climate model. The positions are for one year renewable for up to three years pending satisfactory progress. Position(s) is/are subject to the University's background check policy. Essential Qualifications: The selected candidates will have a Ph.D. in atmospheric sciences (or a closely related field) and one or more of the following attributes: (a) in-depth understanding of weather and climate model components (e.g., dynamics; cloud, convection, and ABL parameterizations), (b) experiences using and analyzing advanced weather and/or climate models, and (c) strong background in the theoretical aspects or modeling of severe weather events (hurricanes and super-cell storms in particular).
