Posting Description: *Key Responsibilities* Leadership: Provide vision, creative ideas and strong writing and editing skills to produce the quarterly magazine. Collaborate with Alumni Association staff and align with the organization's vision, mission and goals. Work closely with staff to promote Alumni Association services, events and programs. Supervise and work closely with associate editor and others on researching, writing and editing content, illustrations and photography for the magazine. Lead the Coloradan Editorial Advisory Group composed of University Communications staff to share story ideas and brainstorm topics quarterly. Participate in the Coloradan Advisory Board and meetings with CU-Boulder Schools, Colleges and Departments to stay current on a broad slate of issues and initiatives. Budget: The editor will prepare, manage and monitor an annual budget of approximately $450,000 and is responsible for the hiring and invoicing of all magazine contract workers including freelance writers, work/study students, designers, photographers and the magazine's printing and mailing representatives. Copy and photography: Identify, write and edit engaging content for the magazine's readers to effectively communicate the university's story to its alumni, faculty, staff and student populations. Creatively and effectively share the successes of the university and alumni through compelling features, visuals, infographics and other communication techniques using magazine best practices. Edit and proof copy to ensure the Coloradan's voice is clear, consistent, factually correct and not marred by spelling or grammatical errors. Research and write articles that encourage alumni to feel a sense of pride in their alma mater and compel them to engage with the Alumni Association, the university and each other. Design and layout: Manage the magazine's look and feel, working directly with outside designers and printers to produce a visually stunning magazine and ensure that quality standards are met consistently. Advertising: Coordinate with Business Development to incorporate advertising into the print and electronic editions of the magazine. Participate in the development of annual magazine specifications and ad rates. Distribution: Coordinate with the CU Foundation to manage the Coloradan distribution list quarterly. Ensure this list is correctly segmented and oversee the mailing of each issue including processing returns, executing internal distributions and archiving office copies. Customer service: Actively engage with the Coloradan's audience both within the publication and through written and verbal correspondence. The editor will conduct reader surveys at least two times per year, track customer interactions, capture and report data and communicate any changes to alumni contact information appropriately. Percentage of time for all of the above: 70 Marketing copy: The editor will produce engaging content for Alumni Association programs, website and collateral as needed. S/he will develop copy for the Alumni Awards Ceremony including letter templates for nominators, winners and non-winning nominees as well as website features, invitations, event program copy and the MC's script. In addition, the editor will write copy for individual events and programs such as Rockies Day, National Western Stock Show, the Heritage Center, etc. Percentage of time 25 Supervision: The editor directly supervises associate editor and works closely with a team of student worker(s), freelance writers and outside consultants on a daily basis. S/he is responsible for the hiring and management as well as maintaining paperwork in accordance with applicable university guidelines. Percentage of time 5 *Salary and Benefits:* $60,000 - 75,000 annually, depending on experience. Minimum Qualifications: *What We Require* *Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications or related field. *Eight years experience in the field of journalism. *Five years of creatively developing and writing marketing pieces for diverse platforms including the web, e-mail, invites, press releases and postcards. *Five years as editor of a magazine, newspaper or related publication *Clear understanding of how a magazine is created, written, edited and printed *Expert knowledge of writing, editing, proofreading and tenets of journalism, including AP style. *Three years in supervisory role *Strong budgetary experience
