Admissions & Student Affairs Specialist

About The Unit:

Unit Job Summary: The Department of Statistics seeks an Admissions & Student Affairs Specialist to fill a position responsible for advising students from point of admission application through graduation and managing all related records. Exercise consistent independent judgment in greeting, advising, and referring all students, faculty and other university student affairs staff appropriately to resources and staff both within the department and otherwise. This staff member reports to the department administrator in managing all department student affairs concerns but has significant responsibilities in the daily management of admissions applications and review, student administrative affairs, organizing and publicizing student events, and maintenance of student departmental records. Assists and advises Admissions Committee Chair, committee, and department Chair on all admissions concerns, student progress, and convocation matters: interacts with student representatives regularly concerning department-supported student events and offices and acts as administrative liaison in these concerns; maintains budgets and collections for select department-provided services for students. Works closely with department administrator and chair to promote the department's outreach interests and image to all visitors, prospective students, and departmental members.

Unit Education: Bachelor's degree required.

Unit Experience: At least two years of progressively responsible work experience required. Direct experience with UC Gargoyle and admissions online application systems and databases strongly preferred. Experience in an academic or nonprofit educational environment highly preferred. Experience with student affairs strongly preferred.

Unit Job Function Competencies: Computer literacy in PC environment with demonstrable facility and high accuracy in standard Microsoft Office Suite programs and PDF management required. Working knowledge of international student concerns and related visa and immigration law required. Interest in public events and daily interactions that are strongly people-oriented required. Ability to maintain basic accounts (budget, collection, expenditure reporting) required. Facility with standard business writing and producing copy for public dissemination required. Ability to speak before large groups, including non-native speakers, required. Familiarity with BuySite, GEMS, and Business Objects highly preferred. Background in higher education student affairs, admissions, and/or public relations highly preferred. Familiarity with University administrative systems, particularly pertaining to student administration, strongly preferred.
