The Writing Program Administrator serves in a leadership role to oversee the development, management, and supervision of writing programs for undergraduate, graduate, and degree completion courses at APU. Duties include teaching one undergraduate writing course per academic year, initiating faculty development programs to improve writing pedagogy, establishing and assessing writing outcomes across the curriculum, and serving on undergraduate and graduate committees to represent writing programs and ensure writing outcomes are being met. The WPA continues as an active scholar, making regular and significant contributions to the field. The WPA will collaborate with other academic support services on campus. The WPA will supervise and manage the writing program staff and manage the office budget.


  • Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition or English.


  • Develop and employ an annual strategic plan directed towards achieving university writing outcomes.
  • Work with the First Year Composition Coordinator, the Director of General Education, the Director of the Writing Center, and other writing-related personnel as needed to develop and monitor a place for creating a culture of writing at APU.
  • Work with all facets of writing instruction at APU to facilitate delivery, assessment, and effective use of writing resources.
  • Work with the General Education Council, Undergraduate Studies Council, Masters Studies Council and Doctoral Studies Council to help the program achieve university-wide aims for writing.
  • Coordinate writing instruction goals for all courses at APU.
  • Coordinate and facilitate writing instruction assessment at APU.
  • Promote writing across the curriculum and within disciplines of study.
  • In collaboration with the Center for Teaching, Learning and Assessment, provide professional development opportunities to faculty teaching writing courses and faculty using writing in courses across the curriculum.
  • Identify resources, needs, develop budget requests, and manage annual budget.
  • Serve on university committees.
  • Collaborate with the Director of the Writing Center, Director of the Learning Enrichment Center and other offices as needed to facilitate delivery of services to students.
  • Teach one undergraduate writing course per academic year.
  • Participate in activities to maintain competency related to current developments in teaching, research and scholarship in rhetoric, composition and program administration.
  • Supervise and manage the writing program staff and oversee office management.


  • Understanding current theories and best practices in teaching, learning, and assessment of written communication.
  • A demonstrated commitment to excellence in writing and writing instruction.
  • Excellent record of teaching and publications.
  • Strong commitment to innovation, experimentation, and quality in education.
  • Expertise in organizing faculty development opportunities
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively and effectively across disciplinary boundaries with faculty, students, and staff.
  • Strong project planning and management skills.
  • Awareness of and sensitivity ot the educational goals of a multicultural population.


  • Three or more years of experience in writing program administration and teaching experience in multiple levels of university writing courses.


  • Full time, 12 months
