Duties and Responsibilities: *Execute media relations tactics from identification of media pitching opportunities to media briefing to managing an editorial calendar of story opportunities. *Drive day-to-day media relations strategies and tactics, including university- and college-specific news releases, research news, events and media requests. *Plan and produce UANow, a twice-weekly e-newsletter, choosing stories of interest to our national audience ? 120,000+ people, including faculty, staff, students, news media, alumni, donors, regents and others. *Work closely with marketing, legislative and community relations, and college communication contacts to understand issues relevant to their clients, as well as to identify key media and stakeholder contacts. *Provide media relations support at key events in the absence of the AVP. *Establish and cultivate local and national media relationships with mainstream, education-related and UA college-specific publications. *Develop, manage and refine appropriate analytics in concert with AVP. *Manage and maintain local, regional, national and targeted distribution lists. *Develop and maintain appropriate media databases. Continually refine identification of media in specific coverage areas. *Create and maintain an editorial calendar in order to anticipate opportunities to provide/promote relevant content. *Implement communication plans and media outreach for special programs, events and major initiatives. *Produce daily news summary (Monday-Friday) that includes all the coverage of the UA and its leaders, faculty, students, employees and researchers that appears locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. *Lead daily news meetings involving all University Relations, Communications, content producers, including video and social media content producers and student interns. *Provide direct management, including staff supervision, of the strategic media relations plans and outreach for University Relations, Communications, staff members. *Lead staff in maintaining regular contact and building strong relationships with education, science, business and consumer journalists covering education and related issues; audit media to keep abreast of education sector, as well as general consumer trends and/or "hot button" issues. *Assist the AVP with writing and editing media-related communications materials, such as news releases, talking points, fact sheets, questions and answers, media statements and other information to support university news and announcements. *Oversee the development of materials that assist colleges/departments with media relations campaigns, including media training for faculty and administrators. *Assist AVP with crisis communications preparedness, response and evaluation. *Proactively report on trends and competitive media placements relevant to the University. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in journalism, communication, public relations or related field with heavy communication emphasis. *Minimum of 5 years communications or public relations experience. *Ability to develop relationships and manage a wide range of media contacts. Outstanding personal communication, organizational and project-management skills; must be articulate and able to represent the UA in the best light in order to secure positive media coverage. *Knowledge of media analytics and media monitoring services. *Strong verbal and relationship-building skills required, as well as persuasive writing skills. *Management experience required, preferably in PR agency or newsroom setting. *Specialized media knowledge with strong media contacts, understanding of competition and industry as well as knowledge of education and related trends. Preferred Qualifications: *Ability to speak and write in Spanish *Experience in higher education *Experience in building/managing media dashboards. *Graduate education or professional-level advanced training in public relations.
