Position Information:
Under general direction from the Manager of the Enrollment Services Department, the International Student Advisor serves as the primary advisor for students, faculty, and public participating in International Education Programs. It is required that the advisor maintain accurate and complete student records as required by law according to Department of Homeland Security, SEVP, Department of State, USCIS, and FERPA. Maintain institutional records through the use of Q2. Through advising, communicate with students and staff the regulations of the federal code as it pertains to individual visas and institutional policies. Develop and implement resources, materials, presentations to effectively provide information to students regarding immigration rules and regulations for F-1, B1/B2, visa waivers and J-1 visas throughout the entire matriculation process. Stay current with all federal regulations through NAFSA forums and Department of Homeland Security. Counsel students regarding educational issues such as course and program selection, class scheduling and registration, school adjustment, career planning. Counsel students regarding immigration issues, such as but not limited to, visa and passport issues, transfers, extensions, travel, change of program, terminations, and withdrawals. Advise individuals to help them understand and overcome personal, social, or behavioral problems affecting their immigration or educational situations. Provide immigration crisis intervention to students when difficult situations occur at school, such as academic, attendance, or behavioral issues that may lead to dismissal or emergency situations. Prepare students for later educational experiences by encouraging them to explore learning opportunities through completion of programs and transfer opportunities. Provide professional support for all other facets of student services in International Education Programs. Ensure maintenance of long term working relationships with international/institutional partners, government entities (state and federal), other UCR campus offices, and other universities and colleges.
Minimum Requirements:
Education and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree or higher.

Successfully pass a background check through the U.S. Department of Justice.

U.S. citizenship or permanent residence as required by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Department of State.

Working knowledge of complex immigration regulations. Ability to comprehend, analyze, and apply immigration regulations, including the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS).

Administrative experience in an office environment providing administrative support for staff and/or faculty.

Skill in coordinating administrative activities by determining the time, place and sequence of actions to be taken.

Superior communication skills to effectively and professionally communicate using tact and diplomacy with internal and external campus community including international visitors.

Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.

Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.

Skill in reading and understanding complex and/or detailed documents such as proposals, contracts, policies, and procedures.

Ability to clearly communicate government regulations and university policies to international students and academic development personnel to ensure appropriate compliance.

Ability to assess and evaluate interactions from an international perspective, using practices in the field of international education
Preferred Qualifications:
Education and experience equivalent to a Master's degree or higher in Higher Education Administration, Counseling, or International Education.

Working experience as a DSO and/or ARO.

Completion of NAFSA programs in J-1/F-1.

Handling complaints, settling disputes, and resolving grievances and conflicts, or otherwise negotiating with others

Communicating with people outside the organization, representing the organization to customers, the public, government, and other external sources. This information can be exchanged in person, in writing, or by telephone or e-mail.

Understanding the implications of new information for both current and future problem-solving and decision-making.

Knowledge of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; learning and motivation; psychological research methods.

Knowledge of group behavior and dynamics, societal trends and influences, human migrations, ethnicity, cultures and their history and origins.

Knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, executive orders, agency rules, and the democratic political process.

Knowledge of a second language.
