Brief Description of Duties: The Department of Psychiatry of Stony Brook University seeks to fill a postdoctoral research fellow position. The successful candidate will collaborate with clinicians, engineers and statisticians in the Department’s Center for Understanding Biology Using Imaging Technology (CUBIT). CUBIT members have a strong track record of obtaining external funding from NIH and other institutions, as well as in guidance and career development of junior members. CUBIT works closely with several other excellent departments including Neurology, Neurobiology and Behavior, Psychology, and Biomedical Engineering. The Department also has strong programs in Psychiatric Epidemiology and Behavioral Sciences and is affiliated with Stony Brook’s Center for Cognitive-Affective Neuroscience of Anxiety and Depression (CANAD).

The candidate will have immediate access to brain MRI and PET data acquired from multiple universities, including Stony Brook. This includes >150 diffusion, functional, and structural MRI images of adolescent females at risk for depression, data from a new study using functional and diffusion MRI and PET in Multiple Sclerosis, an ongoing NIH-funded multi-center study of control (n = 40) and depressed (n = 400) subjects using MRI and other modalities, and a repository of >500 PET images from different tracers. This rich dataset will be used for the successful candidate’s publications and grant proposals. In addition, the candidate will have access to numerous internal funding mechanisms to obtain funding for independent research initiatives. Our goal is to train the postdoctoral research fellow for a successful, independent career in neuroimaging research. The selected candidate will be responsible for:

  • Analysis of PET, MRI, or DTI images.
  • Writing image processing/data processing algorithms in computer code.
  • Writing manuscripts.
  • Assisting in grant applications.
  • Testing new algorithms for potential implementation.
  • Reading current literature.
  • Training new lab employees.

Special Notes: This is a full time position. The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously.
