Job Description Summary:

The Milken Institute School of Public Health (GWSPH) at the George Washington University has an outstanding opportunity for a Web Developer to join the communications team.
This position will be a key member of the 6-person communications team and will work closely with communications staff and the GWSPH IT team to provide expertise and leadership in the on-going refinement of the school's digital communications, and the development of new web communications tools.
The purpose of this position is to provide technical expertise, development and support for the department’s online presence, including websites, digital newsletters, emerging technologies and other digital material, both for public consumption and to support school activities such as teaching, research and students' internships.
This position will liaise with other developers within the school and university and beyond, to understand and address the needs of stakeholders.

Minimum Qualifications:

- Three years experience in website management, website design, implementation and maintenance on-line
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or related field (or years of experience

Desired Qualifications:

- Experience operating Web services in Drupal
- Experience in implementing content management systems and developing database-driven websites
- A solid understanding of the principles of usability and user experience
- Strong background in Internet security principles and secure coding practices
- High proficiency in XHTML, CSS, and use of tools such as Dreamweaver
- Understanding of RSS, XML, XSL, relational database management systems (RDBMS) such as MySQL
- Experience and proficiency with a server-side scripting language, especially PHP.
- Experience working with client-side scripting such as Javascript and jQuery
- Experience working with graphics for the Web
- An understanding of WAI/Sec. 508 accessibility requirements and their impact on deploying certain technologies and web functionality

- Experience working in server administration in a LAMP environment
- Background in version control
- Experience with use of identity services such as LDAP or SAML
- Experience with graphic design, audio and video software such as Photoshop, Final Cut Pro etc.
- Understanding of social media best practices
- Mobile web and stylesheets, familiarity with HTML5 & CSS3
- Experience with email management platforms, such as Convio and MailChimp

Special Instructions to Applicants:

Job Duties
  • Web development (55%):
    • Maintain and extend the school's Drupal-based content management platform including the creation of new Drupal modules and the transition of Coldfusion-based applications to newly created equivalent PHP-based applications.
    • Migrate content from HTML and Coldfusion webpages to new Drupal pages, and archive legacy/unused sites and legacy applications.
    • Add new website functionality and tools
    • Add/enhance website theming, user experience and accessibility
    • Integrate GWSPH websites with external and internal university data sources (such as the university calendar, Banner, GW sign-on system, Salesforce, Mailchimp and Convio)
    • Investigate and evaluate technologies, technical approaches and web best practices for achieving school communication goals
    • Use project management processes for new online communications projects, and provide timely and clear communication on the status of new projects and site improvements.

  • Function:
  • Web maintenance (35%):
    • Provide automated and manual testing and quality assurance for online software and tools
    • Provide maintenance, updates and upgrades for existing software and tools, with an emphasis on security and minimizing negative impacts to users.
    • Identify, triage and fix bugs in online software and tools, including problems reported through the online "report a website issue" form.
    • Review online analytics and reporting, and in consultation with the Director of Digital Strategy, review and improve performance of online software and tools
    • Document relevant history, decisions, approaches and techniques for reference by the communications and IT teams

  • Function:
  • Support, training and outreach (10%):
    • Provide technical documentation and training for digital communications technologies maintained by the GWSPH Office of Communication
    • Document relevant history, decisions, approaches and techniques for reference by website editors and users
    • Assist the Director of Digital Strategy in managing meetings and processes when input is needed from department faculty and staff on online communications matters
    • Offer technical input on how technology can support other members of the communications team in their key areas of focus- media relations, digital strategy and events.
