  • There are currently 3 Academic Advisor job opportunities available. Two (2) will start immediately, the other in July 2014.

Academic advising at Marymount University involves assessing student needs, goals and interests in order to guide students to complete their first year of college successfully and transition to a faculty advisor in their major field.

Advisors collaborate with faculty members and professional staff to coordinate programs and activities that address the needs of individuals and/or groups of students.

Advisors are also responsible for understanding and interpreting Marymount University policies and academic options for all degree and certificate programs to help facilitate student academic success.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's degree in a related field and two years of experience working with college students or young adults in an academic or counseling capacity.
  • Demonstrated experience or interest in helping students transition from high school into a traditional 4-year college program.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to work with faculty, staff and students in a professional, team-oriented environment.
  • Superior interpersonal and problem-solving skills, and sound judgment.
  • Sensitive to issues of ethnicity, disability and diversity.
  • Adhere to strict confidentiality and other ethical standards.
  • Must be student-focused in both philosophy and purpose.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Starfish Retention software and Ellucian Colleague preferred.

Responsibility / Duty
  • Works closely with admissions and financial aid staff to help new first college students make a successful transition to Marymount e.g., participates in summer orientation, builds schedules and makes referrals to appropriate services.

Responsibility / Duty
  • Provides proactive academic advising to new first year students, individually or in groups.
  • Helps students understand Liberal Arts core and University requirements, programs of study and degree options and apply this information to their individual situation.
  • Provides students with information about alternatives and possible consequences of academic decisions.
  • Interprets and administers Marymount University policies and procedures.

Responsibility / Duty
  • Tracks student progress and intervenes proactively to promote student success.
  • Works closely with the Center for Teaching and Learning staff to provide academic support (e.g., tutoring, referrals to Student Access Services).

  • Coordinates with Career Services staff on exploring activities related to students career and major and helps first year students develop preliminary career options.

  • Advises on college transition issues and coordinates with Student Development e.g. Counseling Services or Residence Life as necessary.
  • Proactively discusses financial issues to identify potential concerns and makes appropriate referrals.

Responsibility / Duty
  • Maintains relationships with assigned Department Chair/Program Directors and Associate Deans to understand and clarify departmental and School expectations.
  • Maintains current knowledge of all degree and certificate programs.
  • Facilitates the transition to departmental faculty advising at the end of the second semester; supports the development of strong connections between students and their department and School.

Responsibility / Duty
  • Completes other advising duties as requested such as: tracking retention, authorize add/drop of courses.
  • Keeps advising statistics, advising notes in Starfish and other reporting documents up-to-date.

  • Participates on committees as requested.
  • Participates in professional conferences and other self-directed professional development activities.
