Director of Print and Mail Services
The Director of Print and Mail Services is directly responsible for the day-to-day operations management for all production areas within the department including: offset printing, digital printing, finishing, and mailing services.
This position reports to the Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management.
This position provides direct supervision for the Print and Mail Services center staff.
Within the College, the position has primary working relationships with Marketing/Communications, Technology Services, Admissions, Institutional Advancement, Business Affairs, and other department leaders.
Duties and Responsibilities
Provide direction for client relations, quality control, computerized production management, variable data technology, on-line ordering and document submission.
Develop and promote printing, copying, mailing and distribution operating policies and manage the marketing of departmental services for both on- and off-campus customers.
Serve as the Alfred State liaison for the SUNY initiative for Shared Services providing printing to SUNY campuses that do not have their own print operations. The role is critical and initiative is key to the stability of the Alfred State printing and mail operation. Periodic travel to SUNY campuses throughout the state will be required.
Keep current on new technology and industry trends and suggest technology implementation.
Manage the computerized print management information system, including estimating, job tracking, data collection, inventory, job costing and report writing.
Serve as the technology expert within the department by researching, implementing, and maintaining various systems including digital printing technology, variable data printing, and on-line ordering.
Advance the department’s technological capabilities to meet the College’s needs.
Manage operational budgets and formulate services pricing to assure institutional cost-savings, departmental full-cost recovery, and long-term financial solvency.
Provide a pro-active internal and external communication program with all customers and vendors.
Provide excellent customer service.
Foster an enjoyable work environment based on written College policies and guidelines and offer a learning and growth environment for all employees.
2- or 4-year degree in printing management, printing technology, communications, business administration or a closely-related field
A minimum of 5 years of experience managing a printing/mailing facility along with proven experience in customer service and management of a diverse, demanding, and deadline-oriented workload.
Extensive technology skills, with an in-depth knowledge of applications such as Microsoft Office, InDesign, Photoshop, and Acrobat Professional.
Knowledge of computerized print management systems and an understanding of working in a network printing environment.
Established record of collaboration and good communication skills in a team-based production environment.
Demonstrated strong work ethic, attention to detail, ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, and work well with others.
4-year degree in a printing management, printing technology, communications, business administration or closely-related field.
Experience managing a printing/mailing facility in a university environment or commercial printing facility.
Knowledge of variable and desktop publishing programs.
