Montana State University–Bozeman, Montana’s Land-Grant Institution, invites nominations and applications from outstanding individuals for Head of the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department. This position is a 12-month-per-year appointment reporting to the Dean of Engineering. The M&IE Department offers ABET accredited BS degrees in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial and Management Systems Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering Technology. The Department is also initiating a new BS degree in Financial Engineering. Graduate offerings include MS degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Industrial & Management Engineering, and the Ph.D. degree in Engineering with options in Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Engineering. It is the largest department in the college with noteworthy productivity in undergraduate and graduate instruction, research, and outreach activities. The Department is strong in the traditional areas of each discipline, with substantial laboratory facilities supporting instructional and research missions. Available to M&IE Department faculty are collaborations with MSU’s Energy Research Institute, Center for Biofilm Engineering, Imaging and Chemical Analysis Laboratory, Magnetic Resonance Lab, Subzero Science and Engineering Research Facility, Montana Microfabrication Facility, Western Transportation Institute, Wind Application Center, Montana Manufacturing Extension Center, Thermal Biology Institute, and Center for Bio-Inspired Nano-Materials. The Tenure Track appointment will be at the rank of Associate or Full Professor.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Department seeks qualified candidates with strong academic credentials to provide leadership and administrative skills for a well-established academic and research-oriented department. The Head is expected to advance Montana State University’s prominence as a Land-Grant institution, guide graduate and undergraduate academic and research activities, oversee the department’s budget, be active in fund raising and recruitment, administer program and facilities improvements, lead curriculum development and ABET accreditation, mentor and promote faculty, foster research and creative activities for faculty, interact with industry and alumni, and build collegial interactions with other departments and colleges.

Required Qualifications

1. Earned doctorate in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering or a closely related engineering field. 2. Administrative experience at the department or large-scale project level within an academic or industry assignment. 3. Appropriate experience to be eligible for a senior faculty appointment in the department. 4. Ability to obtain professional registration in Montana within one year of date of hire.
