Position Focus: Reporting to the Director of Marketing and Promotion, this position is responsible for the management and execution of online marketing efforts for one of the largest university presses in the United States. Serving as the chief online marketer for the Yale University Press's publishing program, the position will lead marketing initiatives to increase the Press's online traffic and amplify its marketing presence. Directly working with online publishers, search engines, ad networks and social networks, this role will manage and administer digital marketing resources, including creative production of content across various channels, paid advertising opportunities, social media outreach, maintenance and development of YUP web spaces, and oversee the generation of associated reporting and analysis of all online marketing activities. The position will also be responsible for developing and managing forward-looking strategic communications in new media, both externally and internally.
Principal Responsibilities 1. Works with the Director of Marketing and Promotion on organizational online marketing strategy. Participates in relevant staff meetings, including launches, marketing meetings and author/agent discussions, and contributes online marketing information and updates to executive reports, as needed. 2. Manages the production of multimedia content, including video, podcasts, online banner advertisements, and consumer e-newsletters, and accompanying supervision of the work of graphic and web designers, student interns, printers, video producers and photographers, among others. 3. Oversees the development of YUP web spaces as well as all marketing involved in the promotion of digital products. 4. Manages and develops website/blog content to deliver "Publisher's Voice" to various audiences, including consumer and media, and drives audience engagement, creating compelling story ideas and narratives, producing written content for both external and internal channels. 5. Oversees all North American social media outreach involved in both frontlist as well as select backlist, including the Press' course book program. 6. Manages online marketing campaigns for lead general interest frontlist titles, as well as key backlist. 7. Manages relationships with external media sources as well as internal key stakeholders, including editors, publicists, marketers, and others, with a clear understanding of stakeholder goals. Oversees monthly transatlantic digital marketing committee meetings, providing regular status updates to Executive Committee. 8. Advises authors on online marketing strategy, exhibiting a high degree of professionalism and judgment to align their online efforts with YUP's established digital channels. 9. Establishes timely and accurate metrics for online marketing programs/campaigns that enable YUP to focus on the largest return on investments. 10. Manages assigned budget to determine best allocation of online marketing resources across different promotion vehicles. 11. Develops and maintains regular contact with online media representatives in multiple disciplines, in coordination with the Press' Publicity Department. 12. Stays on top of trends and movements in the digital marketplace, through research, attendance at relevant conferences, and facilitation of relationships with others in the online marketing domain. 13. Serves as point person for University-related social media queries and coordination. 14. Investigates new business opportunities for the digital market. 15. May perform other duties as assigned.Required Education and Experience Bachelor's Degree in a related field and five years in online marketing, book publishing or public relations work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Skill/Ability 1: Proven ability to engage the public using social networks and other on-line media.
Required Skill/Ability 2: Expertise in using the Microsoft Office Suite (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access), a cloud-based documentation and collaboration system, CMS-based website systems, and social media software.
Required Skill/Ability 3: Strong understanding of ROI-oriented marketing and online marketing and advertising models.
Required Skill/Ability 4: Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills for interacting with both internal stakeholders and external partners, as well as excellent organizational skills.
Required Skill/Ability 5: Expertise using online advertising reporting tools, HTML, Photoshop, FLASH, and/or data query tools.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills: Master's Degree Preferred; strong quantitative, analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to use statistics to yield actionable findings; enjoy working as a team player in a fast paced environment; ability to learn new tools and software quickly and independently; have a genuine interest in book publishing; highly creative; aptitude for multitasking projects and tight deadlines.
