The mission of the Institute for Global Leadership at Tufts University is to prepare new generations of critical thinkers for effective and ethical leadership, ready to engage in the world's most pressing problems. The Institute does so by developing and operating core programs and supporting student-initiated projects. The Institute works in concert with the university academic leadership to advance the Tufts mission of active and informed citizenship with a global perspective.
The Institute develops new programs and continuingly evaluates and modifies existing programs. The Institute has more than 28 programs, including Education for Public Inquiry and International Citizenship (EPIIC); the Tufts Institute for Leadership and International Perspective (TILIP); Inquiry; EXPOSURE: Photojournalism, Documentary Studies and Human Rights Program; Voices from the Field; Institute Practitioners and Scholars in Residence (INSPIRE); the Global Research and Internship Program; the Dr. Jean Mayer Global Lecture Series; Synaptic Scholars; New Initiative for Middle East Peace (NIMEP); BUILD (Building Understanding through International Learning and Development); ALLIES (Alliance Linking Leaders in Education and the Services); and the Program for Narrative and Documentary Practice (PNDP). The Institute will continue to develop new initiatives in response to emerging imperative issues.
The IGL has a core staff of six, including the Director. More than 500 Tufts students actively participate in Institute programs annually; more than 100 conduct research projects abroad; more than 100 receive academic credit through the Institute, either through courses or independent research; more than 350 high school students participate in Inquiry annually from 20+ high schools in 6+ states; TILIP brings between 50 and 75 international students to campus for the EPIIC symposium.
The Business Manager is a critical component of the six-person team, and the three-person management team, that comprises the Tufts Institute for Global Leadership staff.
The Business Manager is responsible for overseeing and providing administrative and financial support for Institute programs and activities, including all IGL budget preparation, financial management and reporting (detailed below); establishing human resource systems and management processes, including annual planning, internal meetings, and staff communications; IGL External Advisory and Faculty Advisory Boards' processes and communication (preparation and follow-up); and IGL systems, facilities and infrastructure.
Under the supervision of the Director this position performs technical and professional duties in the development, analysis, inputting and monitoring of budgets, grants, projections and financial documents. Serves as the key liaison with IGL student groups, in the allocation of their budgets. Ensures the timely and accurate deposits of payments to the University Bursar. This person handles the financial and administrative duties of the IGL as necessary, and proactively identifies situations that need follow up and resolution. Serves as a daily resource and liaison for students, faculty and staff who have financial interactions with the office. Will prepare all financial documents for IGL board meetings and monthly IGL budget and fundraising meetings.
Maintaining confidential records and files, both paper and electronic, performing data collection and statistical analysis and research, the preparation and/or production of reports and proposals, and the updating and maintenance of IGL chart of accounts. Will meet with the Assistant Provost to ensure the continual improvement of processes and performance of financial data.
Bachelor's Degree in a related field with 2 years of experience including supervisory experience or equivalent work experience. Strong financial, interpersonal, analytical, and communication skills; demonstrated organization and time management skills and ability to work independently and exercise discretion and good judgment. Proficient in Microsoft Office. Must successfully complete all appropriate background checks as required.
Five to ten years' experience in a progressively challenging financial/accounting position. Any administrative and payroll experience either academic or business related would be very helpful. Prior experience in a university setting.
Special Work Schedule Requirements:
This is a full-time, exempt position. Normal business hours are 9:00 am - 5:00 pm. There are two weekends per year -- for the EPIIC Symposium and the Inquiry Simulation -- that need to be staffed by the Institute Administrator. On occasion, must be willing to work longer hours and staff evening events.
