Job Description: The Center for Written and Oral Communication (CWOC) at the University of Florida, College of Liberal Arts & Science invites applications for a full time Director of Debate/Speech Lecturer. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and includes a full benefits package. The position is an annual, renewable term-contract position beginning Fall semester 2014. The successful candidate will be responsible for directing the policy debate program, coaching and traveling with the debaters to regional and national tournaments, coordinating duties for debate graduate assistants, establishing recruiting initiatives, organizing research efforts for the team, performing minor administrative duties, and expanding a public debate initiative for campus and community outreach. Teaching duties will include 3-6 credits/semester in Communication Studies and other courses in the candidate's area of specialization. Summer teaching for additional compensation may be available. Participation in Center projects and college-wide activities is required.
Minimum Requirements: 1. Excellence in classroom teaching. 2. Experience teaching public speaking or other related communication studies courses. 3. Previous experience competing and/or coaching policy debate at the college level. 4. Master's degree in Speech Communication or related field (for example: Journalism, English, Political Science, etc.) completed by August 16, 2014. 5. Valid driver's license and willingness to travel frequently. 6. Demonstrated appreciation for intercollegiate forensics as both an educational and competitive activity. 7. Willingness to represent the university in the best possible manner to its various constituencies and ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students in a broad range of professional capacities.
Preferred Qualifications: 1. Experience developing and teaching online courses in the field. 2. Ph.D. in Speech Communication or related field.
Special Instructions to Applicants: The UF Speech & Debate Team: The 30+ member integrated Speech and Debate team at UF has an annual travel budget averaging $50,000 each year. This financial support comes from several sources including student activity fees, administration, and supportive alumni. On average there are five active policy debate teams on the squad who travel extensively during the academic year to regional and national tournaments. The Dial Center: Our program has 6 full-time and 20+ part-time faculty or graduate teaching/coaching assistants. While our program does not currently offer a major, we do offer a minor in Communication Studies and teach over 2000 students each semester who are required to take our courses for their varied majors.
