Primary Function of Organization Unit: CALS Communications is a news and education unit that provides communications services for N.C. State's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. The unit includes, writers, magazine editor, publications editor, graphic designer and administrative assistant who collaborate on a variety of projects. The group produces a college magazine - Perspectives - and provides web content for college and N.C. Cooperative Extension websites. CALS Comm also support media relations and issues press releases about college news. In addition, CALS Comm supports Cooperative Extension's education mission through the creation of print and web publications and educational videos.

Essential Job Duties: Manage publication projects through the stages of editing, design, prepress, printing, and distribution, including online placement and preparation of documents for use with mobile devices. Perform substantive editing, copy editing, rewriting, and proofreading of publications written by College of Agriculture and Life Sciences specialists. Materials include scientific reports for technical audiences, crop production and management information for agricultural producers, 4-H publications for youth, and newsletters and fact sheets for the general public about gardening and other topics of interest to laypeople. Some of the key duties of this position include, but are not limited to: * Help faculty and staff develop strong communication strategies for printed and electronic publications produced by Cooperative - Extension. * Select and work with qualified freelance editors and designers who will help Extension specialists develop publications. * Use Adobe InDesign and Microsoft Word for editing and desktop publishing.

Department Required Skills : * Bachelor's Degree in English or Writing and Editing; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: * Master's Degree in English or Writing and Editing. * Knowledge of offset and digital printing processes. * Knowledge of agriculture, life sciences and land-grant universities. * Five to seven years of experience in copy-editing, copy-writing and technical editing of publications and fact sheets. * Experience with Chicago Style; familiarity with other style standards helpful.
