Date: May 5, 2014 Title: Assistant Professor of Reading, One Year Full Time Temporary Contract Position Number: 542 Academic Calendar Year: 32 weeks Date Available: Fall 2014 Annual Salary Range: $52,991 (Master’s Degree) Reports to: Associate Dean, School of Arts & Sciences Posting Closes: June 5, 2014 ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS - Teach developmental reading classes within the English Department. - Develop, revise, and assess developmental reading courses. - Mentor and advise students. - Contribute to the growth and development of the English Department and the College by participating in committee work, department planning, and college-related activities. - Engage in on-going professional development activities and maintain expertise in the teaching of developmental reading. - Demonstrate a commitment to using current and emerging technologies and innovative pedagogies in the classroom. JOB SPECIFICATIONS Education and Credentials - Degree requirements: Master’s in Reading, Specialist in Reading, Secondary or Master’s in Adult Literacy or Master’s in Education with an Emphasis in Reading (at least 18 credit hours in reading for secondary or post-secondary learners). Experience - Evidence of some training, coursework, or seminars in teaching reading to developmental students. - Recent teaching experience (community college level preferred but not required). Skills & Mental Demands - Skill in working with diverse student populations who represent a wide range of abilities, ages, ethnic groups, and national origins. - Engagement in and development of a variety of innovative teaching methods. - Demonstrated commitment to the continuous improvement of teaching and learning at the community college. - Demonstrated expertise in the subject matter. - Understanding and appreciation of the nature of community college students, the community college teaching load, and the community college mission. Physical Demands - Must be able to stand or sit for long periods of time. Working Conditions - Classroom environment in an academic setting.
