The Academic Advisor provides support and guidance to BSBA students regarding college and university policies, course selection, pre-registration, registration, and co-op scheduling. The Advisor monitors academic progress for students from freshmen year through graduation. The advisor works with the same group of students over a four-to-five year period; and, each year through continuous interaction identifies developmental needs for the individual as well as the class level. In response to this, the Academic Advisor implements established programming for their class and oversees a specific program assignment. In the last year of the student, schedules and conducts senior interviews that result in correct and coherent “senior clearance plans” which students use as a contract in their final semester to complete their degree. Then, in April, August and January perform final clearances of seniors in preparation of graduation.
Advisor will prepare and teach workshops and one-credit classes helping BSBA students chart their academic progress. This person becomes a mentor and guide throughout the academic career of the student.
The Advisor will be involved with various management tasks within the Undergraduate Business Programs Office.
The academic advisor, trains, mentors, and works closely with the Academic Services Coordinator. Together, as an advising team they develop strategies to improve student services and retention.
The Advisor uses many university systems to monitor the student’s progress. For example, s/he utilizes the FACT system to identify and communicate with students who are experiencing academic difficulties and works with students who are placed on academic probation to help alleviate academic stressors and increase performance. The academic advisor will be involved with all orientations and special events hosted by the Undergraduate Programs Office.
During the following academic years, the academic advisor must complete the following activities with their class year: 1) Freshman year: prepare and teach a one credit course helping freshman students to transition to the Business school and chart their academic progress and skill development. Conduct sophomore planning meetings.
2) Junior year: conduct junior clearance to map out the students final year of academics.
3) Senior year: conduct a senior interview which results in a correct and coherent “Graduation Plan” which students use as a contract in their final semester to complete their degree. Then, in January, May and August performs final clearances of seniors in preparation for graduation. Recommend students for appropriate degrees to the Director of Student Services after a final analysis of courses and grades.
Masters degree required, preferably in counseling, human services or higher education (or equivalent experience advising in a college/university.) A minimum of three-to-four years of work or educational experience; preferably in higher education. Must enjoy working with students and helping guide them through their academics to graduation. Excellent computer (Excel and Word), written and oral communication skills required. Individual must have excellent management skills, plus demonstrated counseling ability utilizing development theory to create a student-centered academic environment. Individual must demonstrate the ability to supervise others, take initiative, and organize effectively. Must be detail-oriented and have the ability to work with precision and be able to keep calm under pressure. Since the average student caseload for advisors in the CBA is approximately 500 students, the stress and demand factors for the advisor is extremely high. Person also must be able to empathize with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Presentation skills are required. Individual needs to be able to work as an integral member of a team as well as have leadership qualities. Manage college wide processes including, graduation clearance, academic audits, academic standing reports and advising statistics. Must possess ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, parents and university-wide administrators.
