Position Summary: The FRIB is recruiting for a Mechanical Design Engineer II to join the mechanical engineering department; the successful candidate will play an important role in designing and engineering sophisticated technical equipment and will support the life cycle from concept, design, fabrication, to testing and installation; produces and documents effective design solutions by developing concepts, performing engineering calculations and creating CAD designs/details; provides engineering support for fabrication, assembly, and commissioning of technical equipment; interacts with project leader and subject matter experts to transform technical requirements into design solutions; presents design solutions to stakeholders and convenes design reviews to obtain stakeholder feedback and endorsement; assists project leader and subject matter experts in reviewing design layouts, budgets, project documentation, construction, testing, modification of hardware and software, and/or the installation of sub-systems; provides technical direction to support staff and students; uses 2-D and 3-D drawings and models produced by designers and engineers in order to create detail drawings; uses GD&T extensively; uses software systems to keep track of drawing approvals and revisions; uses plotters and printers in order to make necessary copies of drawings for distribution; maintains design and detail drawing files and records.

Knowledge equivalent to that which would normally be obtained by completing a four-year college degree program in mechanical engineering or related field; three years of progressively more responsible or expansive work experience with industry to produce and check mechanical drawings for production; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; ability to handle export controlled materials.

Typing Requirements (wpm):

Desired Qualifications: Three to five years of work experience with industry to produce and check mechanical drawings for production; experience with CAD/CAE, experience with SolidWorks/ANSYS; experience in the design and fabrication of sophisticated research equipment; work experience in fabrication techniques, cryogenic systems, electronics, mechanical and electronic drafting and computer systems; Certified SolidWorks Associate or similar preferred.
