Position Summary/Purpose of Position: The Advisor will provide advising assistance to current and future majors regarding completion of the major requirements, course selection inquiries, and academic planning of future semesters; Provide information on the Limited Enrollment Program gateway requirements/applications process for students planning to apply to the major; Use university advising tools such as Degree Navigator, Advise on the Web, and the Student Information System (SIS) to monitor a student’s degree progress. Response to e-mail and phone inquires about the COMM major and conduct regular information sessions to explain the admission requirements for COMM. Conduct graduation audits to ensure students who have applied for graduation have met the requirements for the major. Other duties that relates to the undergraduate program in communication may be required. Please send inquiries to Leah Waks at leahwaks@umd.edu Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree Required plus 3-5 years of experience in academic advising of undergraduate students; accurately reviewing and maintaining student records; working with student affairs units. Preferences: Master’s preferred. Knowledge and experience in the field of communication highly desirable. Experience in counseling, advising and/or working with diverse populations is highly desirable. Preferred: experience with using technology in advising, specifically knowledge of SIS, ADVISE, and DEGREE NAVIGATOR; experience advising student organizations.
