Position Summary/Purpose of Position: The Research Safety Specialist is responsible for implementing laboratory safety programs at the University of Maryland, College Park. Responsibilities include: conducting laboratory safety inspections that focus on chemical and physical hazards in the laboratory, evaluating new hazardous materials and/or experimental procedures and recommending appropriate control measures, investigating laboratory incidents, developing guidance documents to assist researchers with managing safety in their laboratories, conducting laboratory safety training and performing industrial hygiene monitoring. Minimum Qualifications: This position requires a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college/university and 2-5 years of experience in the environmental, health and safety field or in a research laboratory. The candidate must: 1. Have basic knowledge of laboratory safety practices and the health risks associated with hazardous materials. 2. Have the ability to work effectively with all organizational levels associated with the laboratory environment, facilities management and Environmental Safety. 3. Be able to write clear and concise reports detailing observations, interpreting regulations/policies and making recommendations. 4. Have strong verbal and writing skills, including the preparation of technical documents for non-EHS staff. 5. Have computer skills including the use of Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint). 6. Have or be able to obtain a valid Maryland driver’s license. Preferences: 1. Experience in a large research university or similar setting. 2. Bachelor of Science degree in safety, engineering, industrial hygiene, chemistry, environmental science or a related field. 2. Understanding of OSHA/EPA regulations, policies and guidelines that apply to research laboratories. 3. Experience developing and presenting EH&S training programs. 4. Experience with electrical safety, nanotechnology laboratory ventilation.
