Position Summary/Purpose of Position: The Director, Maryland Fund for Excellence, will provide leadership that accelerates the University of Maryland‘s annual fund program to new heights. The director has overall responsibility for the planning and management of the program and all centralized annual fund efforts across campus. As the University prepares for a major campaign, the annual fund will play an important role in building the level of donor support by instituting more sophisticated, comprehensive and aggressive strategies. The director will focus on high level responsibilities of the UMD annual fund, such as brand management, value delivery and donor experience. In order to focus on building a centralized and customer-centric marketing model, extra focus will be assigned to simplifying the complex set of internal systems to create a more user friendly, relevant and rewarding ‘donor experience’. The director will work to refine the donor/member conversion process in order to yield greater returns and increase the percentage of alumni and other constituents that participate. Work with Deans and Development Officers to design annual campaigns that compliment school/college needs, but is orchestrated into a centralized operational plan to reach peak performance. Develop school and college participation goals and incorporate a greater focus of fundraising at the local operational level. This position supervises a staff of 2 employees (with 3 planned new additions in FY15) and reports to the Senior Director. Minimum Qualifications: Education (include licenses, certifications, etc.): Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s preferred. Experience: Five years or more of fundraising experience in higher education or similar area. Experience with annual giving solicitation strategies, including direct mail, telemarketing and electronic media. Experience marketing a comprehensive annual fund program with multiple constituent bases. Experience with staff management, development, and team building. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Understanding of major research university environment and team-oriented approaches. Knowledge of fundraising principles, concepts and techniques. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written; ability to speak and write persuasively. Excellent creative skills. Ability to evaluate and solve problems creatively. Ability to administer and forecast budgetary needs. Highly motivated; ability to lead and motivate others. Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines. Ability to travel occasionally and attend evening and weekend activities.
