Duties: A Systems Programmer is needed for the computational biology laboratory in the University of Pennsylvania, School of Arts and Sciences, Department of Biology. The main responsibilities will be to maintain computing resources comprised of a Linux cluster, Apple and Windows desktop computers. The applicant will responsible for maintaining a large biological-based dataset, including off-line data backups. Additionally, the application will be expected to run basic existing analysis procedures and provide limited programming, database, and webserver support. Qualifications: Qualified candidates should have a B.S. or higher degree in bioinformatics, computer science, or other related fields, and 1 years or more working experience. The ideal candidate will be a recent graduate with a computer science background and a strong interest in developing skills in computational biology. Working knowledge of Linux systems administration, Windows and Mac OS desktop support and basic networking is required. Experience with Python, Perl, Bash, SQL, PHP, enterprise SAN/NAS systems, tape backups, and Bacula backup software is preferred. Candidate expected to have experience in or demonstrate a strong desire to learn about bioinformatics, genomics, and handling of next-generation RNA sequencing and/or SNP genotyping data.
