About The Unit: Through strategic outreach, authentic reporting, and creative media, University Communications illuminates and supports the mission and the many initiatives of the University of Chicago. University Communications furthers the goals and priorities of the University and its academic units by telling the stories of UChicago and sharing its culture within our community and beyond. In promoting awareness of the University, we aim to help our campus partners recruit students and faculty, disseminate the work of our scholars, engage our diverse community, attract visitors, and reinforce our unique intellectual culture. The News Office reports the initiatives, developments, and research of the University to a global audience of students, alumni, and the general public. Members of the news team coordinate media relations and advance the University's work by connecting reporters and broadcast producers with our faculty experts.

Unit Job Summary: The News Office of the University of Chicago is seeking an enterprising writer and media relations officer to cover the University's intellectually rich and ever-changing campus life. The Campus Life News Officer will be responsible for finding and writing enterprising stories and pitching stories to local and national news media, with a focus on topics involving students. The stories will reflect the range and impact of student pursuits, from unique academic projects and achievements to an array of extracurricular activities. In addition, the writer will contribute to the News Office's efforts in developing stories about community engagement and institutional advancement. This position requires a skillful, energetic and prolific writer with an eye for story ideas that illustrate the University's impact in the world. They must have experience crafting engaging narratives, and the ability to create multimedia packages for the University's home page and other University websites. The News Officer should have a knack for communicating with students, the ability to work with a creative team, and the maturity to understand how college life relates to the world at large. Responsibilities include writing news releases and facilitating contact between students, staff, faculty and the news media. This will include extensive work with student publications at UChicago. Experience in promoting stories through social media is a significant advantage. The Campus Life News Officer will also help create strategic plans for communicating about student and campus life issues, and will contribute to internal communications. They may be called upon to help members of the University community understand, craft and execute broad-based communications plans, along with other duties as assigned. Over time the Campus Life News Officer will develop extensive contacts among reporters and organizations covering higher education, student life and related issues. A cover letter, resume, writing samples that demonstrate strong reporting and writing skills, and reference contact information are required to be considered for this position.

Unit Education: A Bachelor's degree is required.

Unit Experience: At least two years of professional experience writing for news publications, preferably including stories about educational issues, required.

Unit Job Function Competencies: A demonstrated ability for prolific output required. Familiarity with the needs of reporters in print and broadcast media required. Knowledge of grammar, punctuation, spelling and style required. Excellent verbal and written communication skills required. Analytical skills required.
