Description


Job Summary:  The radiation therapist is an integral part of the radiation oncology treatment team.  This person is responsible for the accurate delivery of therapeutic radiation treatments to patients.  The therapist must have a thorough understanding of the rationale for radiation therapy as well as skills in patient assessment and interpersonal communication.

 

Function:  Administers daily radiation therapy treatments to patients assigned to the treatment unit, accurately and efficiently, at a speed consistent with patient scheduling.

-          Reads, understands and carries out complex medical prescriptions and demonstrates necessary manual dexterity and psychomotor skills to operate and manipulate the mechanical motions of complex radiation-emitting treatment units.

-          Works under stress and pressure.


Function:  Maintains records of daily treatment, simulation and other records as required.

-          Proactively reviews patient's charts; attends chart rounds as assigned and verbally communicates information back to treatment area.

-          Completes all treatment records and simulation forms in a timely manner.

-          Completes incident forms and risk management forms in a timely manner.

 

Function:  Performs mandatory quality control activities and participates in the Continuous Quality Improvement program of the treatment area and department.

-          Performs quality assurance procedures.

-          Alerts appropriate personnel and provides clear, concise information regarding mechanical problems and service needs.

-          Records all equipment downtimes in department log.

 

Function:  Consistently adheres to all departmental policies concerning radiation therapy treatment procedures and rational, safety, attendance and dress code.

-          Assures that all aspects of patient care policies and procedures are followed.

-          Demonstrates respect for patient's right to privacy, all matters are to be handled in a confidential manner.

 

Function:  Participates in clinical instruction and evaluation of students for the radiation therapy program as a clinical instructor.

 

Function:  Maintains a level of professionalism that creates positive working relationships and working environment by attending lectures, seminars, and in-services to stay abreast of new techniques and to comply with registry requirements.

 

Function:  Utilizes resources and controls resources through careful management of supplies and equipment.

-          Effectively uses the experience and abilities of other staff members.

 

Function:  Performs all computed tomography simulation procedures according to established department protocols.

-          Assists in the movement of patients to and from the CT imaging table.

-          Performs appropriate volume of procedures at a speed consistent with patient scheduling.

-          Ensures that the correct patient information, technical settings and appropriate slice thickness are entered prior to scanning.

-          Demonstrates capability of explaining procedures to patient, considers patient's comfort during procedure, and understands emotional response when procedure is completed.

-          Prepares and administers oral and intravenous contrast media according to established procedures.

-          Completes appropriate patient documentation.

-          Displays working knowledge of cross-sectional anatomy.

-          Processes, records, and archives images for evaluation, interpretation and maintenance purposes.

-          Completes filming of all simulations in a timely fashion according to radiation oncologists' requirements.

-          Completes processes to send image data to Advantage Sim.

-          Communicates identified patient related problems using the appropriate clinic policies and procedures.

 

Function:  Performs all tasks associated with the proper execution of a CT simulation in accordance with the established clinic policies and procedures.

-          Accepts assignments from supervisor in a positive manner; recognizes and performs duties that need to be accomplished although not routine.

-          Restocks and maintains assigned work areas/equipment in an orderly fashion

-          Performs necessary cleaning of room and equipment.

-          Assists in the movement of patients to and from the CT imaging table.

 

Function:  Performs all assigned VARIS transactions to ensure that accurate patient simulation and treatment information is recorded in a timely fashion for dosimetry and billing purposes

-          Completes patient treatment/simulation in VARIS.

-          Schedules appropriate appointments for patient treatment and simulation.

-          Enters appropriate charges for procedures and treatments performed in ARIA.

 

Function:  Performs the float therapist duties in a rotational manner between the other radiation therapists.

-          Facilitates workflow through all areas of the clinic

-          Assists receptionist and administrative assistant in performing registration tasks

-          Assists in coordinating weekly chart rounds

-          Performs daily linac and CT warm ups unless otherwise arranged with the radiation therapist staff

-          Performs CT simulations during the float rotation

 

Function:  Provides radiation protection to patients, staff and self according to prescribed safety standards.

-          Wears and maintains dosimeter badge in a proper fashion.

-          Demonstrates knowledge of and compliance to radiation safety practices.


Preferred Education, Skills, and Experiences:

  • 1 year or more of related experience
  • BLS certification
  • Graduate of an accredited four year program, strongly preferred

Additional Information:


This is a part-time, PRN non-exempt position. 


Hours are typically Monday - Friday with hours ranging from 6:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. to provide coverage during clinic hours.  There are 2 shifts for this position and candidate selected must be available during the varying shift hours of 6:30 a.m./7:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m./3:30 p.m. and 8:00 a.m./8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m./5:00 p.m.  candidate selected must be able to provide coverage during these clinic hours to care for patients.


Hourly rate is dependent upon education and experience. 
 
Background screens will be performed and education will be verified prior to employment.  Please be prepared to provide required information and/or documentation.

Basic Qualifications

This position requires a Graduate of an accredited discipline specific program and relevant experience or the equivalent.
