The General Accountant will provide high level support to the Finance Department. This position reports directly to the Controller, but will also have a close working relationship with other staff in the division. The accountant will also have regular contact with department heads, UNC General Administration, Office of State Budget, and our State Auditors. This individual will be able to work independently with little or no supervision, and must be exceedingly well organized, flexible, and possess the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a high level of professionalism. This position will use independent judgment while working on multiple projects to determine those that require priority attention. A thorough working knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles is essential. This knowledge will be used in the day to day operations of the department. This position will play an integral role in the year end processes. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: preparing check writes, including direct deposits and cash requisitions; determining eligibility and securing necessary documentation for honorariums, independent contractor, and foreign nationals; preparation of 1099 tax forms; analyzing, reconciling, and preparing journal entries for feeds for several University departments; assisting with campus wide annual fixed assets inventory. Year- end close duties are especially important, including: changing from cash system to accrual system for financial reporting, preparation of financial statement notes and CAFR worksheets, and working with auditors during the audit process.

Minimum Education/Experience/Skills

Bachelor’s degree with 12 credit hours of accounting coursework; or Associate’s degree in accounting; or Associate’s degree in business or related discipline with 12 credit hours of accounting coursework; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Preferred Education/Experience/Skills

The preferred candidate will have working knowledge, technical skills and abilities to perform the functions necessary in the operations of General Accounting. The ideal candidate will hold a four year degree in Accounting, be familiar with all aspects of the Banner Accounting System, and have experience in North Carolina state government. Five years of accounting experience is also strongly preferred. The ideal candidate will be familiar with all aspects of the Banner Accounting System.

Work Schedule and Hours

Typical hours are Monday – Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Occasional evenings and weekends as needed to meet the needs of the department.
