Position Summary:

The College of Engineering at Northeastern University invites applications to join the Gateway faculty team, whose main role is teaching first-year engineering students. This is a full-time, benefits eligible, non-tenure-track position, as an Academic Specialist. Appointments are made on an annual 8 month basis, salary commensurate with experience.

The main responsibility of this position is teaching. The annual teaching course load is six courses, with several sections of the same course in any semester, over Fall and Spring semesters. There may be opportunity for teaching, if desired and available, in engineering discipline courses, especially undergraduate courses if in agreement with Gateway and Department needs. The Academic Specialist may also participate in department, university and professional service activities as well as research activities, including, but not limited to advising undergraduate students, student recruiting, educational research, publications, and presentations.

Course assignments will be at the undergraduate level, focusing on the first-year engineering courses which are all 4 semester credit hours. These courses emphasize design and problem solving using engineering tools and software. The Gateway faculty work as a team, developing course curriculum and content, along with working together during the semesters on delivery and student interactions.


Ph.D. required, in Engineering or related field, with B.S. and M.S. preferred to be in Engineering also. At least 2 years’ experience in teaching undergraduate students is recommended. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Industrial experience is desirable, but not required.

This team works closely with the colleges’ academic advisors, with faculty in many departments; filling a crucial role in equipping first-year students for success. The team environment is a crucial aspect of this role, and will also be instrumental in providing support to new faculty.
