The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor seeks a Director for its new University Writing Center beginning in August of 2014. UMHB seeks faculty and administrators who are active Christians and dedicated teacher-scholars to prepare students for leadership, service, and faith-informed discernment in a global society. The Director of the University Writing Center will spearhead the university’s efforts to accomplish its new Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), The Writing Cru, which aims to develop strong foundational writing skills in students and to develop those skills with discipline-specific writing. The QEP accomplishes those aims through the new University Writing Center and a robust writing intensive program. UMHB is conveniently located in Belton, an historic town of 18,000 in the heart of central Texas. Excellent schools, abundant cultural and recreational opportunities, and a high quality of life are hallmarks of the local community. Director Responsibilities: Reporting to the Provost, the director will lead the development and implementation of Writing Center services. The director will create, implement and deliver writing workshops and programs to meet the needs of students and faculty. The director will be responsible for hiring, supervising, and training of Writing Center staff, coordinating the university’s writing emphasis (WE) program, and training discipline-specific faculty liaisons. The director will guide and direct tutors to provide students with personalized writing instruction that reflects and integrates current writing theory and practice for a wide range of writing projects. In addition, the director will develop and implement ongoing assessments (surveys, data analysis and research, etc.) to ascertain learning outcomes of the Writing Center and the QEP that inform student success. The director will increase awareness of Writing Center services by creating and publishing appropriate marketing literature. The director will manage the Writing Center’s budget. Although this 12-month, tenure-track position includes a faculty appointment in an appropriate department, it does not include an assigned teaching load. Qualifications: A Doctoral degree in Rhetoric & Composition or Curriculum & Instruction, or a related field is required. ABD will be considered. Demonstrated knowledge of Writing Across the Curriculum/Writing in the Discipline is required. At least one year of experience teaching at the college level is required. Two years of professional experience in a writing center are required. Experience in administration of a writing center is preferred. Excellent teaching and communication skills, a dedication to professional attainment, and commitment to quality improvement are essential. Must be an active, committed Christian.
