About The Unit: The Laboratory Schools is among the largest independent schools in the country with a history dating to 1896 under the auspices of John Dewey and the University of Chicago. Located on the U of C campus, the Schools serve children (N-12) from metropolitan Chicago with approximately 60% of the students coming from families affiliated with the University. The University environment attracts a rich and diverse student body and parents who value and support a quality educational program. The Science Department is responsible for the education of students in grades 5 - 12. The classes taught by the Science Department include Earth Science, Physical Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics as well as several elective classes.

Unit Job Summary: This is a ONE-YEAR Only part-time position covering for a teacher on special assignment. Science Teacher - Middle School: The Science Department is responsible for the education of students in grades 3 - 12. The Science Teacher maintains up-to-date teaching techniques to provide students with a quality educational experience. This includes the development of and execution of curricula that focus on inquiry based experiences, multiple levels of material engagement and the use of scientific tools and technology. Science teachers report to their respective Principals and to the Science Department Chair. Teachers are expected to work collaboratively with other teachers in the Science Department to insure that curricula are developmentally appropriate and work synergistically with the grades 3 - 12 departmental scope and sequence. The science teacher is also expected to work in collaboration with their own faculty and interact productively with colleagues outside their faculty, other professionals, staff and administrators, and parents. The work year is 178 days (or as stipulated in the Faculty Association contract). This position is part-time, one-year assignment: Two sections of Middle School (8th Grade) Earth Science. Each section meets 4 times a week for 45 minutes each meeting. At present these classes are scheduled in the early morning, leaving the day free from 10:45 AM on. Anticipated start date for this position is September 1, 2014. This position may close on or before May 16, 2014.

Unit Education: Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree in a field of science or related field preferred.

Unit Experience: Teaching experience in Earth Science required. Teaching experience in Middle School classrooms preferred. A minimum of three years of classroom experience teaching in a field of science preferred. Experience in developing curriculum strongly preferred.

Unit Job Function Competencies: Comfort level teaching Middle School science required. Strong knowledge of Earth Science required. Knowledge of instructional methodologies required. Ability to develop curricula, lesson plans and assessment tools required. Analytical skills required. Problem-solving skills required. Decision-making skills required. Attention to detail required
