Student Financial Aid Assistant

Job Description Summary:

This is advanced clerical work in processing student financial aid applications and other necessary paperwork in the application process. Includes processing loan applications, advising students and parents of available aid, assisting in the administration of the College Work Study Program and scholarship program and performing required clerical work. May supervise subordinate clerical or student workers. Work requires independent judgment in recommending the approval or denial of financial aid applications within federal and state guidelines. Work is performed under the supervision of the Financial Aid Director through observation of results, subject to periodic audit.

Minimum Qualifications:

Graduation from a standard high school supplemented by considerable experience in bookkeeping, records maintenance and related clerical work.

Excellent communication skills to assist students, parents, faculty and staff.

Ability to sit or stand for extended periods.

Ability to view and work with figures and computer screen for extended periods.

Preferred Qualifications:

Good working knowledge of rules, regulations and policies related to student financial aid.

Considerable knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, computers and equipment.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, fellow staff and parents.

Ability to learn financial aid software programs for all aspects of operation and update skills as needed.

Essential Duties Summary :

Assists in processing financial aid applications, compiles and verifies data, and provides information on rules and regulations.

May screen applications for College Work Study Program, interfacing with employing department and student applicant, issuing timesheets, recording student aid awards, hours worked and remaining award.

Assists in compiling data and preparing federal and state financial aid reports. Advises students and parents of financial aid including deadlines, procedures, types of available aid and factors determining need.

Assists with orientation and financial aid seminars as needed. May compose and type correspondence, reports, award notifications.

Will update and maintain financial aid files; input and verify financial aid data into computer.

Answer telephones, personal inquiries, routes mail, schedule appointments and assist with busy front desk.

Will perform other duties as related.
