Director, Institutional Research, Assessment & Effectiveness
Founded in 1891, West Virginia State University (WVSU) is a public, land-grant institution, which was originally founded as a historically black university, but which has evolved into a fully accessible, racially integrated, and multi-generational institution serving approximately 2,700 students. The University is a community of students, staff, and faculty committed to academic growth, service, and preservation of the racial and cultural diversity of the institution. WVSU offers baccalaureate programs in business, liberal arts, professional studies, sciences, and social sciences. In addition, the University provides master’s degrees in biotechnology, media studies, and law enforcement administration. The University offers education through flexible course offerings in traditional classrooms, in non-traditional settings, and through distance learning technologies. The Director is responsible for organizing and managing the daily activities of the institutional research office including providing leadership in supporting the University’s strategic planning process and in preparing and analyzing University and community demographics, projections, and studies. The Director will maintain and enhance institutional reporting and analytical capabilities through the development of improved, centralized data management processes. The Director is responsible for assisting in the creation of measureable goals and assessment of outcomes for the University and in applying appropriate quantitative and qualitative research design, and statistical tools and analysis to institutional areas such as staffing patterns, planning, process improvement, program and services review, curriculum, accreditation, student outcomes, student and staff characteristics, enrollment management, data integrity, and state and federal reporting requirements. The successful candidate will possess a master’s degree (a doctoral degree preferred) with a background in an area demonstrating applications related to institutional research and assessment and at least five years of experience in applying statistical and research methods. The successful candidate will possess demonstrated experience in the ability to prioritize and meet competing internal requests for support and external reporting requirements; exemplary written, verbal, and presentation skills; strong interpersonal skills with an ability to establish and maintain excellent working relationships across University constituencies; experience with standard statistical procedures relating to sampling, correlation analysis, projections, instrument design, quantitative and qualitative measures applied to educational and social research; and expert knowledge of data management within institutional systems and the effective warehousing and managing of institutional data.
