Position Summary: The National Spherical Torus Experiment-Upgrade (NSTX-U) - a magnetic confinement fusion research device located at Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) - has an employment opportunity for a post-doctoral research position in experimental plasma physics. PPPL is a national laboratory operated for the United States Department of Energy (DoE) by Princeton University under Contract No. DE-AC02-09CH11466. The duties associated with this position involve improving understanding of the physics of the formation of the high-confinement region (H-mode pedestal) in the edge of the NSTX-U tokamak. In addition to the experimental characterization of the edge pedestal using a Thomson scattering system, numerical models are expected to be utilized and/or developed for advancing the understanding of the pedestal. Finally, development and implementation of the control of the pedestal will be performed using a range of control tools such as gas/mass injection and 3D magnetic fields.

Essential Qualifications: The successful candidate must have Ph.D in Physics or equivalent within the last five years with strong experimental physics skills. Experience in both basic plasma physics and numerical methods, and hands-on optics and/or laser experience are desirable. In addition, the successful candidate should have the ability to work within a group/team environment while also being able to work independently, and have strong communication skills.
