Whitman College invites nominations and applications for the position of President.
Founded in 1882, Whitman College is a highly selective private, independent, co-educational, non-sectarian residential liberal arts and sciences undergraduate college located in Walla Walla, Washington, recently named as one of 24 Best Places to Live and Work by Sunset Magazine. The College is home to approximately 1,500 undergraduates from forty-four states, the District of Columbia, two U.S. territories, and thirty nations. Exploring forty-five majors, Whitman students develop capacities to analyze, interpret, criticize, communicate, and engage through a concentration on basic disciplines within a supportive and unpretentious academic community. The College fosters intellectual vitality, confidence, and leadership, along with the flexibility to succeed in a changing technological, multicultural world.
Over the past decade, Whitman has significantly increased the number of tenure track faculty positions and the racial and ethnic diversity of the student body, launched a Global Studies Initiative, created programs for innovation in teaching and learning, dramatically increased student involvement in faculty research, and begun planning a major in computer science. The College also completed major capital projects, which included: a center to advance dialogue among students, faculty, and staff on diversity and intercultural issues; new buildings dedicated to art, fitness, and student health/wellness; and major renovations of its theatre, science facilities, administrative offices, and varsity athletic venues. Over this period, the endowment has grown to its current $500 million. In addition, a $150 million capital campaign will be completed in June 2015.
The next President will have a remarkable opportunity to build on the strengths of Whitman College working with its faculty, staff, students, alumni, donors, partners, and friends to collaboratively develop, shape, and advance a strategic vision for the College's future.
