POSITION DESCRIPTION:

1. JOB PURPOSE

Clemson University has built a large wind turbine drive train test facility to provide testing services to the wind industry with the goal of improving reliability and reducing the cost of energy delivered.  The facility located at the Charleston Naval Complex in North Charleston, SC.  Test equipment in facility is under final commissioning now and will transition into operations during 2014. The mission of the facility is to provide high quality services to wind turbine industry and energy sector for testing of up to 15 MW wind turbines, drive trains and gearboxes, generators and convertors, software and grid connections.  The facility will strive to establish long term partnerships with industry for research and educational opportunities related to systems engineering, advanced materials, lubricants, advanced testing methodologies and predictive failure analysis. Equipment Specialist will report directly to the Director of Operations and will work closely with other team members, customers, 3rd parties Contractors and students. Equipment Specialist will assume day-to-day operation, service and maintenance responsibility for 7.5 MW and/or 15 MW test rigs and test center utilities. This position requires an individual with strong technical understanding and experience in dynamic mechanical systems and testing, a commitment to safety and environmental stewardship, strong interpersonal and organizational skills.  Job performance will be based on the ability to effectively manage and maintain the operation of the test rigs, continually improving test rig utilization and customer satisfaction.  

2. JOB FUNCTIONS

TEST RIGS AND TEST CENTER
Equipment maintenance, calibration and service  E/25%

TEST CENTER OPERATION
Day-to-day issues - electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, cranes, cooling, controls  E/25%

TEST CAMPAIGN SUPPORT
Support test engineers for test preparation, execution and reporting  E/20%

SAFETY
Implementation, safety walks, risk assessments, compliance with safety state and federal regulations  E/15%

OTHER
Customer, contractors and 3rd party's interaction, students support, short term projects and other tasks under other test center needs and management requests  E/15%
QUALIFICATIONS:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENT:

A high school diploma and professional experience directly related to the area of employment.

PREFERRED IN ADDITION TO THE MINIMUM:

2 years technical degree from an accredited college or institution of higher learning. Other education background can be accepted with right combination of extended experience and advanced skills set

At least 3 years strong  practical background and hands on experience in mechanical or electro-mechanical systems testing, test benches commissioning or operation, rotating equipment maintenance or servicing in MW power range

Experience and understanding of test center utilities, maintenance procedures  and service:  hydraulic equipment, cooling systems, motors, drivetrains and cranes

Good understanding and knowledge of safety and environmental regulations related to large scale testing and industrial facilities. Safety mindset, focus  and safety attitude

Experience in HALT, HASS, MEOST or Reliability testing for large mechanical or electro-mechanical structures, or wind turbine components

Knowledge of industrial or wind turbine components: gearboxes, bearings, motors, generators, convertors

Experience with testing in the filed or at test centers under standards or certification bodies requirements

Experience in data acquisition,  data processing, sensors

Experience with hydraulic equipment and components

Critical combination of  electrical, mechanical, controls and troubleshooting skills

Experience in crane operations and/or rigging and heavy lifts

Deep expertise or advanced skill set in other technical area not described in requirements for current position

Experience in oversight and mentoring to student interns and/or graduate students.

Proven record of research or collaboration projects with top industrial market leaders or laboratories

Experience in working in multicultural environment

Good business acumen
PAY & WORK SCHEDULE:

Standard Hrs: 37.5;  Band: 06 ($ 37,945.00 - $ 70,204.00)

Able to work overtime during critical periods of test campaigns if necessary and requested
BENEFITS INFORMATION:

Employees who are in time limited positions will earn one and one-quarter days of Annual and Sick Leave per month for a total of thirty (30) days per year. Eligible part-timers will earn days on a pro rata basis.
