I.T. Assistants perform entry-level professional work in technology-related disciplines.  While areas of specialization vary, typically I.T. Assistants work in areas such as development/programming, communications, technical support, or similar based on the needs of the Information Technology area to which they report.  Work tasks include resolving minor technology problems, monitoring activities, and maintaining documentation.  They have latitude for independent initiative and judgment, under supervision.

IT Assistant




Working under the direction of the Chief Technology Officer and working closely with The Department of Public Safety and their designees the incumbent would be the lead electronic security IT team member responsible for maintenance, installation, troubleshooting, and pre-maintenance checks and services as well as assist Public Safety Special Operations Team in the system management in reference to all electronic security systems operated by Bronx Community College Department of Public Safety. Electronic Security systems to include low voltage systems including access control, surveillance devices and network, intrusion and duress alarm systems, Public Safety related network infrastructure, computer systems used by Public Safety, any future electronic security systems installed, and assist in IT and electronic security projects as designated by supervisor.

- Diagnose network problems, service and repair technology-related equipment, including but not limited to computers, printers, monitors, modems, scanners, disk and tape drives, video conferencing equipment, digital projectors, telephones, public address equipment and the voice, data, and video cables and/or wires required for this equipment.
- Utilizes equipment, tools, and software designed for testing and problem diagnosis.
- Assembles and installs hardware for securing components for safety and anti-theft purposes.
- Troubleshoots, diagnoses problems, implements corrective action procedures within prescribed guidelines, and/or escalates to other technical resources as appropriate.
- Tests programs and hardware devices.
- Performs hardware installation and setups with multiple electronic security system products such as intrusion detection, video surveillance, access control systems and all related equipment.
- Performs system functionality testing of equipment, identifying and correcting security appliance or services faults.
- Performs software installation, testing, monitor and software quality control of such installation
- Supports network connectivity issues.
- Sets up switches and related network components related to the installation of electronic security projects and college Local Area Network.
- Troubleshoots network interruptions (system, ports).
- Performs system inventory upon request.
- Completes preventative maintenance inspections.
- Maintains accurate records by documenting installations and services performed.
- Maintains service manuals, testing instruments, and tools in current working order.
- Supervises and leads junior wiring and installation staff.
- Contributes to unit goals by accomplishing related duties as required.


1.High School Diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent
2.A minimum of six months of full-time experience in a computer or technology-related position.  Experience that is more than 20 hours per week and less than 35 hours per week may be counted at 50% of the requirement (i.e., two months of part time experience equal to one month full time experience)
3.Additional experience and/or education that can be met by ONE of the following:  An additional three years and six months of full-time work experience in a computer or technology-related position; an Associate's degree plus 18 months of full-time work experience in a computer or technology-related position; or a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
4.Demonstrated English Language proficiency
5.A Motor Vehicle Driver's license, valid in New York State, may be required for some, but not all positions.
This title has three levels.  To qualify for Levels 2 and 3, additional qualifications, such as education, experience, or certification relevant to the area of specialization are required.


Preferred Qualifications:
- At least 3 years of experience in working with various electronic security systems such as IP and Analogue Surveillance Systems, Access Control Systems, Alarm Systems, and the aforementioned software from an installation, troubleshooting, and networking perspective
- Proficient in the use of forensic tools and security management software
- Excellent communication skills


New hire:  $46,704*
Incumbent:  $52,776
*This amount reflects a 13% salary suppression in effect for the the first 24 months of employment only.
