The University of California, Riverside (UCR) invites inquiries, nominations and expressions of interest for the new leadership position of Vice Provost for International Affairs. Part of the prestigious ten campus University of California system, UCR brings together scholarly excellence and access in ways unlike any other major research university in America. The impact of UCR faculty is widely recognized in leading international rankings, including UCR ranking 35th (and 10th in Natural Science and Engineering) in the latest Leiden University ranking. Likewise, in the Academic Ranking of World Universities by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, UCR’s ranked 37th regarding highly cited researchers (per capita) and 26th in papers published in Science and Nature (per capita). The campus is a living laboratory for the exploration of issues critical to communities around the world, including air, water, energy, transportation, politics, the arts, history, culture, healthcare and education. UCR ranks second among national universities in the U.S. in the Washington Monthly ranking that measures contributions to the public good. UCR’s undergraduate student body is one of the most diverse in the U.S. including race, ethnicity and socioeconomic status. International students represent approximately 30% of UCR’s academic graduate student population and a modest but growing proportion of the undergraduate student population. Consistent with its strategic plan, UCR 2020, the campus seeks to attain the profile of an Association of American Universities (AAU) member institution, while still preserving the distinctive values and spirit that are essential parts of UCR. Under the new leadership of Chancellor Kim Wilcox, UCR is pursuing ambitious plans for growth and faculty hiring. UCR’s new School of Medicine, the first new public medical school on the West Coast in nearly fifty years, just enrolled its first class last fall and the new School of Public Policy has a founding dean and will begin admitting students shortly. The Vice Provost for International Affairs will play a critical role as UCR’s chief academic officer for international programs and engagement. As the founding Vice Provost for International Affairs, the successful candidate will have an exciting opportunity to provide strategic vision and to increase the visibility of international endeavors. The successful candidate will galvanize efforts and leverage existing strengths on campus in order to advance the cause of internationalization on the UCR campus and seek additional opportunities in keeping with UCR’s priorities. This includes developing and coordinating international collaborations with selected universities (UCR has a large number of MOUs with universities in China, Korea and other countries). In addition, the President of the University of California recently named UCR as the lead campus for a UC-Mexico initiative, and UCR is home to the University of California Institute for Mexico and the United States (UC-MEXUS) research institute. The Vice Provost will oversee offices such as the International Education Center, Education Abroad Program and the International Scholars Center. Equally important, the Vice Provost will be coordinating a rich variety of international activities with offices and stakeholders on campus including Student Affairs, the Graduate Division, the Academic Senate, University Extension, Research and Economic Development, Undergraduate Education, University Advancement as well as initiatives with the colleges and schools and individual faculty. The Vice Provost for International Affairs will report directly to the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost. S/he will have a tenured underlying faculty appointment at the University, preferably at the rank of full professor. This position is for a 100% time administrative appointment at least for the first two years. Vice provost positions at UCR are two-year renewable.
