Financial Aid Specialist Sr. (#499384) - Student Financial Aid; Full-time; Salary: $31,500; Closing: April 7, 2014. General Description: The purpose of this position is to provide financial assistance to college students through appropriate means which may include: State grant programs, awarding student loans, yearly financial aid database reporting, FISAP federal reporting, maintaining compliance with Lamar University's Athletics' Scholarship Program, working with the Student Financial Aid Appeal Program, and running daily reports while ensuring that all federal and state regulations are met regarding financial aid. This is accomplished by determining financial eligibility, serving as a liaison between student/parent and lenders, other schools, state and federal government entities, and working with other university departments. Other duties include providing assistance with Student Orientations and Open Houses, making presentations, and assisting students and parents as needed. Essential Job Functions: Primary responsibilities: responsible for establishing, processing, and reconciling of all students eligible for certain waivers/exemptions from the Texas Higher Education Board (THECB), processes all NCAA student athletes' scholarships and waivers including compliance with NCAA and their database. Process yearly federal and state reporting such as FISAP and the FAD. Strict adherence to established NCAA Southland Conference, Lamar University and Texas State University System rules and regulations. A violation of these rules and regulations can lead to disciplinary action up to and including termination. Also serves as a financial aid liaison by speaking and/or giving presentations to special groups. Must be a self-starter. Education/License Required: Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelor's degree or equivalent. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Position typically has no responsibility for supervision of direction of others. Personal contacts are with employes within the work unit and/or general public, including students, in a highly structured situation which involves obtaining, clarifying, or giving facts or information. Must have excellent communication skills, and attention to detail. This position involves significant interaction with students and parents thus excellent customer service skills are also required. Strong analytical and computer proficiency skills are necessary, along with the ability to multitask effectively. This job title normally performs the duty assignment after receiving general instructions as to methods, procedures, and desired end results. There is some opportunity for discretion when making selections among a few, easily identifiable choices. The assignment is usually reviewed upon completion. This job title requires a comprehensive, practical knowledge of a technical field with use of analytical judgment and decision-making abilities appropriate to the work environment of the organization. This job title has no budgetary responsibility. This job title must be able to obtain and retain full access to NSLDS (National Student Load Database System). This position is security-sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215, which authorizes the employer to obtain criminal history record information.
