Chairperson of Graduate Communications Design (1376)
Located on Pratt’s Manhattan campus in the culturally rich and diverse neighborhood of Chelsea, we seek exceptional applicants who will bring the experience and vision necessary to assume the academic and administrative leadership of the Graduate Communications Design Department. The new Chairperson will oversee over 40 faculty, an Assistant Chair, and an Assistant to the Chair; and will administer departmental initiatives, sponsored studios, external partnerships, and international study opportunities. This administrative appointment carries a twelve-month per year workload and a three-year contract that may be renewed.
The Graduate Communications Design Department, which has been educating graphic and package designers for over 40 years, currently offers 60-credit MFA and 48-credit MS programs. The Communications Design degree is ranked in the top twelve graduate graphic design programs in the nation by US News & World Report. Additionally, Pratt was recently recognized as one of the five most influential graphic design schools of the past half century in a survey of 10,000 design professionals by Graphic Design USA magazine. Beginning in July 2014 the School of Art and Design will be restructured into two schools: the School of Art and the School of Design. The Department of Graduate Communications Design will be one of the departments in the School of Design, along with Undergraduate Communications Design, Interior Design, Industrial Design, and Fashion Design.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE CHAIR INCLUDE:
- Oversight of budget and course scheduling;
- Curriculum development, program reviews, and assessment;
- Recruitment and development of faculty;
- Student recruitment, admissions, and advisement;
- Teaching one course per semester;
- Working with the marketing and public relations divisions to advance the department’s profile;
- Working with the corporate relations division developing and managing external industry partnerships;
- Participation in fundraising and institutional advancement;
- Serving on Institute and School committees and the Chairs Council;
- Raising the Department’s profile through outreach to the local, national, and international academic and professional communities and;
- All other related activities and special projects as required.
Applicants must demonstrate exceptional professional achievement in the discipline of design. We require a terminal degree or its equivalent in communications/graphic design, or a related field; at least three years of administrative experience, preferably in higher education; a minimum of five years of full time college level teaching experience; and recognized standing in the field.
SALARY: Commensurate with experience and qualifications.
