GENERAL DUTIES

I.T. Assistants perform entry-level professional work in technology-related disciplines.  While areas of specialization vary, typically I.T. Assistants work in areas such as development/programming, communications, technical support, or similar based on the needs of the Information Technology area to which they report.  Work tasks include resolving minor technology problems, monitoring activities, and maintaining documentation.  They have latitude for independent initiative and judgment, under supervision.

CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION

Working under the direction of the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and working closely with The Department of Public Safety (CPS) the IT Assistant would support the electronic security senior IT team member responsible for maintenance, installation, troubleshooting, pre-maintenance checks, and services in reference to electronic security systems operated by Bronx Community College Department of Public Safety. Electronic Security systems include low voltage systems such as access control, surveillance devices and network, Intrusion and duress alarm systems, Public Safety related network infrastructure, computer systems used by Public Safety, any future electronic security systems installed, and assist in IT and electronic security projects as designated by supervisor.
- Operates, transports, makes minor adjustments to, and helps install and configure equipment such as computing devices of all types.
- Maintains and works on communications network equipment, related equipment, and multimedia communications.
- Performs routine system operations and administration.
- As directed, makes minor adjustments and implements routine technical updates to hardware and software.
- Maintains records such as inventory records and records of assignment and use of technical equipment.
- Logs and documents, problems, reports, and actions taken.
- Tests computer and communications equipment to check its capacity and capability to perform as specified, and reports findings. Identifies problems regarding computer, peripheral, or communications equipment, and the operating environment.
- Maintains standards for safety and for the proper use of equipment and tools. Adheres to uniform performance standards and efficient work methods.
- Occasionally assists in orientation and training of new staff. May temporarily supervise other personnel.
- Troubleshoots, diagnoses problems, implements corrective action procedures within prescribed guidelines, and/or escalates to other technical resources as appropriate.
- Tests, diagnoses, repairs, and installs wiring, cables, terminators, and jacks required for appropriate use of transmitting/receiving devices to all federal, state, local, and electrical requirements/standards.
- Assists senior IT staff in performing hardware installation and setups with multiple electronic security system products such as intrusion detection, video surveillance, access control systems, and all related equipment.
- Assists senior IT staff in performing system functionality testing of equipment, identifying and correcting security appliance or services faults.
- Assists senior IT staff in performing software installation, testing, monitoring, and software quality control of such installation.
- Performs system inventory upon request.
- Performs technical research related to issues that need resolution.
- Contributes to unit goals by accomplishing related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1.High School Diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent
   
2.A minimum of six months of full-time experience in a computer or technology-related position.  Experience that is more than 20 hours per week and less than 35 hours per week may be counted at 50% of the requirement (i.e., two months of part time experience equal to one month full time experience)
    
3.Additional experience and/or education that can be met by ONE of the following:  An additional three years and six months of full-time work experience in a computer or technology-related position; an Associate's degree plus 18 months of full-time work experience in a computer or technology-related position; or a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
  
4.Demonstrated English Language proficiency
   
5.A Motor Vehicle Driver's license, valid in New York State, may be required for some, but not all positions.
  
This title has three levels.  To qualify for Levels 2 and 3, additional qualifications, such as education, experience, or certification relevant to the area of specialization are required.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Qualifications:
- Proficient in the use of security software
- At least 2 years of experience in working with various electronic security systems such as IP and Analogue Surveillance Systems, Access Control Systems, Alarm Systems, and the aforementioned software from an installation, troubleshooting, and networking perspectives

COMPENSATION

New Hire:  $41,175*
Incumbent:  $46,528
*This amount reflects a 13% salary suppression in effect for the first 24 months of employment only.
