I.T. Assistants perform entry-level professional work in technology-related disciplines.  While areas of specialization vary, typically I.T. Assistants work in areas such as development/programming, communications, technical support, or similar based on the needs of the Information Technology area to which they report.  Work tasks include resolving minor technology problems, monitoring activities, and maintaining documentation.  They have latitude for independent initiative and judgment, under supervision.

IT Assistant




The applicant will report directly to the Director of Client Services and Office Information Security and will be responsible for overseeing the daily coordination and functioning of both the Tech Center and Fishbowl General Computer Lab.  He/she will maintain the working order of the Tech Center and Fishbowl General Computer Lab equipment and supplies.  He/she will also train, supervise, and coordinate the employment of lab monitors, assistant manager, and smart rooms and laptops reservation.  The position also requires interaction with upper management, staff, and students to enhance services provided by the center.  The position's responsibilities require independent analysis with great communication and problem-solving skills.

The successful candidate will be expected to: 
- Assist students with log-in issues with computers, printers Wi-Fi, e-mail, CUNY Portal, and Blackboard.
- Maintain supplies for the lab (e.g., paper, printer toner, printer maintenance kit), as well as ensure all the equipment is in working order.
- Ensure staff assist students and faculty/staff users in the use of supported software applications and hardware.
- Manage a team of College Assistant & Hourly IT - Tier 1 and lab monitors.
- Coordinate and maintain work schedules of student employees (College Assistants/Hourly IT) to maintain coverage during computer lab hours.
- Pre-approve staff working hours.
- Manage the submission, review, and follow up of SysAid tickets
- Generate reports and maintain records of services and lab usage for assessment and planning.
- Serve as a liaison between Client Services and the Service Desk.
- Help provide ongoing training and supervision to student lab monitors and federal work study students regarding computer and printer software, hardware, and lab procedures.
- Promote the services available in the computer center to clientele (faculty, staff, and students).
- Report hardware and software problems with computers and printers to the Client Services team.


1.High School Diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent
2.A minimum of six months of full-time experience in a computer or technology-related position.  Experience that is more than 20 hours per week and less than 35 hours per week may be counted at 50% of the requirement (i.e., two months of part time experience equal to one month full time experience)
3.Additional experience and/or education that can be met by ONE of the following:  An additional three years and six months of full-time work experience in a computer or technology-related position; an Associate's degree plus 18 months of full-time work experience in a computer or technology-related position; or a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
4.Demonstrated English Language proficiency
5.A Motor Vehicle Driver's license, valid in New York State, may be required for some, but not all positions.
This title has three levels.  To qualify for Levels 2 and 3, additional qualifications, such as education, experience, or certification relevant to the area of specialization are required.


Preferred qualifications include:
- Proficiency in working with Windows 7, OS X, and Google Docs
- Ability to set priorities and move several tasks forward simultaneously
- Strong management skills
- Strong knowledge of computer software and hardware commonly used in the computer labs, including operating systems and troubleshooting/hardware maintenance software
- Analytical and creative abilities to accommodate the varied and constantly evolving needs of the student population
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, SPSS, iOS Apps, multimedia applications
- Strong organizational skills
- Strong creative problem-solving skills and a positive attitude
- Knowledge and experience in assessment and planning processes


New Hire:  $46,704*
Incumbent:  $52,776
*This amount reflects a 13% salary suppression in effect for the first 24 months of employment only.
