Work Schedule (Other than Standard) Friday - Tuesday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Position Focus: Assists with daily operations and care of animals. Ensures and maintains established standards of practice and operational efficiency. Serves as a source of information to investigators and support staff on animal handling, restraints, and pre- and post-procedural care for husbandry or sanitation services.

Principal Responsibilities
1. Observes and evaluates animals for signs of illness and stress and deviations in animal conditions. Feeds, houses, and handles animals in accordance with institutional, local and Federal regulations.
2. Performs animal care with veterinary oversight which may include specialized drug administration, sample collection, and pre and post procedural care. Maintain records of treatments.
3. Provides husbandry and specialized services for animals in animal colonies. Maintains, sanitizes, and decontaminates animal rooms and facilities within low to moderate hazardous areas, e.g. BL2.
4. Performs rodent euthanasia services according to established standards and practices and/or assist in non-rodent species euthanasia.
5. Maintains required records according to institutional, local and federal regulatory standards.
6. May train and/or instruct staff on sanitation, animal handling, restraint and care techniques appropriate to level.
7. Performs periodic decontamination, maintenance and rotation of equipment in facility washing centers. Operates animal care processing equipment on either clean or dirty side and/or specific washing center; diagnoses mechanical, technical and/or process problems.
8. Maintains inventory of supplies.
9. May act as a driver; operating vehicle in order to pick up and deliver animals and materials to assignment locations, applying proper animal handling and care protocols.
10. Performs additional related tasks as necessary.Required Education and Experience
Four years of related work experience, two of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and a high school level education; or two years of related work experience and an Associate''s degree; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.

Required Skill/Ability 1: Ability to follow Standing Operating Procedures.

Required Skill/Ability 2: Ability to recognize signs of well being, illness and abnormalities.

Required Skill/Ability 3: Ability to be sensitive to and appreciative of research animals.

Required Skill/Ability 4: General knowledge of computer use and ability to monitor emails.

Required Skill/Ability 5: Ability to understand and use short notes, basic written instructions and forms; ability to understand complex and detailed protocols.

Physical Requirements: Ability to lift 50 lbs and push and pull 75 lbs.

Preferred Licenses or Certifications: Assistant laboratory Animal Technician certified by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science.
