C-Level & Executive Directors

Duties: Reporting directly to the Associate Vice Provost (AVP) for Research and the Executive Director of Center for Technology Transfer and Penn's Center for Innovation (CTT/PCI), the COO will be work with the AVP and the PCI Chief Business Officer (CBO) to oversee CTT as it transforms into the PCI commercial enterprise. The COO will partner with and support the AVP and the CBO in the strategic process of reshaping the operational and administrative infrastructure currently managed by CTT into a unified Penn Center for Innovation over the coming year and into the future. The COO will be responsible for working closely with the AVP and the CBO as a unified senior executive team to create and manage a true matrix organization in which the administrative and business divisions of the PCI organization work together in a seamless and efficient manner to best serve the interests of the Penn faculty clients and external corporate partners. The COO will play a critical role as PCI expands its reach and services and will have both internal and external facing responsibilities, ranging from program management, business development and administration (information technology, reporting, and facilities) and human capital (HR/recruiting, mentoring, career progression). The COO will lead and oversee all of the operational and administrative divisions of PCI, including Finance, Administration, Legal Affairs and Intellectual Property (IP) and all associated personnel and will deputize for the AVP, as requested and as needed.

Qualifications: Masters/MBA or other advanced degree and 7 to 10 years of professional experience overall or equivalent combination of education & experience; minimum of five years of senior-leadership experience supervising seasoned staff, experience as relationship builder & communicator with experience leading diverse work teams, developing an organization-wide strategy for program excellence, engaging community partners; Detail-oriented with ability to manage multiple, complex projects & interact appropriately with individuals across University; Highly self-motivated professional with exceptional & demonstrated leadership, communication, supervisory & negotiating skills; Strong oral, interpersonal & written communication skills; Ability to interact effectively in both academic & corporate cultures; e.g. with scientists, research sponsors, industry representatives & patent attorneys; Understanding of university technology transfer business & faculty client service model strongly preferred; strong computer skills; Working knowledge of intellectual property protection methods, licensing practices, contract law, as well as government laws/regulations relating to technology transfer within industry &/or academia a plus; Excellent analytical, problem-solving, marketing, organizational, & demonstrated ability to negotiate & close complex transactions; Extensive operations experience, including understanding of budgeting processes & basic accounting principles; Entrepreneurial; Results-oriented; Independent self-starter with strong work ethic; Excellent time management & prioritization skills.
