Campus Recreation Services (CRS) at Towson University is currently accepting applications for an Assistant Director, Outdoor Recreation to provide direct management and oversight of the daily operations for all outdoor recreation programs and facilities associated with CRS. CRS is a high energy, dynamic workplace whose mission is to offer recreational opportunities promoting the development of student leaders and healthy lifestyles through physical activity and experiential education. The department is seeking a motivated professional interested in joining a growing team of equally dynamic and energetic staff members preparing for the design and construction of a 100,000 square foot expansion to the current recreational facilities of Burdick Hall set to open in the spring of 2017. The Assistant Director, Outdoor Recreation will assist in the planning and design of all outdoor related areas including an outdoor recreation resource center, gear and equipment storage center, and gear rental facility.
Responsibilities: Administer, supervise and manage the day-to-day operations of the outdoor recreation program including management of a 5,000 square foot climbing gym, 11 element low-ropes challenge course, outdoor adventure experience program, outdoor adventure experience leader training program, and any other outdoor recreation programming for the University community; create, implement and supervise a variety of organized and informal outdoor recreation programs for all students, faculty, staff and alumni based on current and established outdoor recreation trends, principles, guidelines, and risk management principles related to campus recreation outdoor adventure based programming; oversee all operational aspects of outdoor recreation facilities and equipment to meet the growing needs of the campus community.
Requirements: Master’s degree in outdoor recreation, experiential education, outdoor education, sports management, recreation or closely related field. Demonstrated supervisory experience in managing a diverse outdoor recreation program to include programming, facility management and staffing preferably in a campus recreation setting; demonstrated ability performing technical skills and instructing activities associated with outdoor recreation related to rock climbing, kayaking, skiing/snowboarding, mountaineering, wilderness first aid, experiential education and team building; demonstrated ability to facilitate outdoor recreation instructional classes, workshops, clinics, and special events including team building and participant debrief of outdoor excursions; and current CPR and AED certifications. A Criminal Background Investigation is required for the hired candidate and the results may impact employment.
Preferred Qualifications: Three years of full-time professional experience in outdoor recreation related programming (two years as a Graduate Assistant will count as one year of professional experience); Wilderness First Responder Certified; and current CPR and AED instructor certification.
