Communication Studies Instructor

Essential Functions:

Include teaching the full range of classes appropriate to the Communication discipline including but not limited to: public speaking, interpersonal communication, argumentation, persuasion, group communication, oral interpretation, intercultural communication and other courses offered by the department. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students and staff; participate in appropriate professional meetings and workshops; teach in a variety of instructional settings and times (including days and evenings); participate in the extracurricular activities in the department; serve on college and district committees; participate in student learning outcome improvements and assessments; participate in curriculum development and program review; participate in the accreditation process; and otherwise fulfilling all the duties and responsibilities of instructors as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Include an earned master’s degree in speech, speech broadcasting, telecommunications, rhetoric, commuinication, communication studies, speech communication, or organizational communication; OR bachelor’s dregree in any of the above AND master’s degree in drama/theater arts, mass communication, or English; OR a valid California Community College Credential; OR the equivalent education and/or experience (requires an equivalency); AND demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Desirable Qualifications:

Experience teaching a variety of communication courses at the community college level; experience in developing new courses; experience with educational technologies; experience participating on committees; working with students of various cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds; knowledge or experience with program review, student learning outcome assessment and the accreditation process; knowledge of the community college our mission and goals; participation in professional organizations, and extent of related work and professional experience and potential for contribution to the institutional vitality and growth.

Conditions of Employment: 177 duty days.

Salary and Benefits:

Starting salary is $51,992 – $78,276 based on education and experience. A doctoral stipend of $1,945 is available. In addition, the district offers an attractive fringe benefit package including health, dental, and vision coverage for the employee and dependents, and life insurance for employees. Employees are also members of the California State Teachers’ Retirement System (CalSTRS).

Selection Procedure:

Applications will be screened to determine which applicants meet the minimum qualifications as stated in the job announcement.

From the applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and who have submitted all the required documents, a selection advisory committee will determine the candidates that meet the highest degree of desirable qualifications. They will be invited to interview.

The selection advisory committee will rate responses to the interview questions, teaching demonstration and writing prompt (if applicable). Based on this rating, a small number of applicants will be selected as the “recommended candidates”. These candidates will be forwarded to the Vice President of Instruction and College President for final interviews. A hiring recommendation will be made by the College President and forwarded to the Board of Trustees of State Center Community College District for final approval.
