Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree. Ten or more years of progressive athletic administration experience. Demonstrated experience in development, fundraising, and donor development. Significant experience in strategic and financial planning. Commitment to diversity and the development of an inclusive campus. Lead with the highest ethical and moral standards. Ability to communicate and integrate with the local community. Collaborative management style. Understanding of the New York metropolitan market.
Preferred Qualifications: Advanced degree.

Brief Description of Duties: The Director of Athletics has responsibility for the University's Intercollegiate Athletics program, including selection and management of coaching and administrative personnel; preparation of long-term program and financial plans; development and management of the annual operating budget for the Department of Athletics; media and sponsorship contract negotiations; and coordination and oversight of athletic facilities. The Director is also responsible for strict compliance with regulations governing intercollegiate athletics and all applicable University, Conference and NCAA rules and policies, as well as Title IX and Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity guidelines.

Duties & Responsibilities of Director of Athletics:
  • Lead the development of Athletics fundraising goals and work in close coordination with University Development to develop fundraising strategies to meet strategic priorities. Meet with donors and prospective donors as part of on-going fundraising activities.
  • Provide visionary leadership and role modeling for sustaining a culture of transparency, professionalism, integrity and respect at all levels.
  • Participates and oversees the selection and management of coaching and administrative personnel to support the myriad of Athletic operations and to ensure successful athletic programs.
  • Preparation of long-term program and financial plans to establish the direction and goals of the division, which includes current program capabilities and proper assessment of aspirations for future programs. Plans will be developed and coordinated in conjunction with institutional five-year plans.
  • Development and management of the annual operating budget for the Department of Athletics.
  • Supervision and direction of media and sponsorship contract negotiations to promote Stony Brook athletics and assist in fundraising and community relations.
  • Coordination and oversight of athletic facilities.
  • Compliance with regulations governing intercollegiate athletics and all applicable University, Conference, and NCAA rules and policies, as well as Title IX and Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity guidelines to assure the operating integrity of programs and provide the best possible environment for student athletes, coaches, and staff.
  • Provides leadership and direction regarding athletic conference relations and scheduling.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships and communications with faculty, administrators, staff, student body, student government association, alumni, friends, booster clubs, and the local community regarding athletics at Stony Brook.
  • Recognize that students must find a balance between academic success in a rigorous academic setting and athletic endeavors, while working with faculty/staff both internal and external of the department to support this commitment.
  • Support the professional development of the administrative and coaching staffs, promote their accomplishments, and establish positive morale and relationships.
  • Supervise all athletic staff and recruiting and evaluating Head Coaches.
  • Participate actively on university committees and in campus discussion on a variety of student and institutional issues.

Special Notes: This is a full time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously.
