Position Focus: Reporting jointly to the Vice President for Development and the Dean of the Yale School of Medicine, the position will have broad responsibility and authority to lead the medical school's expanding development effort. The AVP will lead a team of 28 professional staff members in pursuit of this increased philanthropic investment. Develop and grow a grateful patients program and accelerate the involvement of faculty. Expand the prospect pool. Assess staff as well as support systems and processes to maximize fundraising potential. Develop and implement a strategic plan. Participate as a member of the Vice President for Development's senior leadership team and help promote an institutional culture of teamwork.

Principal Responsibilities
1. Manages, mentors, and guides a team of high-level Directors in their work in support of fundraising activities.
2. Sets and achieves fundraising goals. Develops strategies to increase gift revenue results.
3. Maintains and strengthens relationships with key volunteers.
4. Leads efforts to identify and cultivate new donors.
5. Implements strategies to provide professional development for staff and to encourage their highest level of performance.
6. Promotes relationships between Yale's prospects and the President, University Officers, Trustees, development staff, faculty and volunteer leaders.
7. Serves as the primary contact for fundraising issues for various groups across campus.
8. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree, ten years of fundraising experience and eight years of managing/leading a team of fundraising professionals or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Skill/Ability 1: Development experience: building and running successful development operations in complex and matrixed environments.

Required Skill/Ability 2: A successful track record of identifying, soliciting and securing major, principal, and transformative gifts.

Required Skill/Ability 3: Management and leadership experience: A visionary, creative leader with characteristics necessary to focus, motivate and inspire professional staff, academic leadership and volunteers alike.

Required Skill/Ability 4: Extraordinary interpersonal and communication skills necessary to establish strong relationships and partnerships internally and externally.

Required Skill/Ability 5: A sense of urgency and commitment to a clear set of priorities, a collaborative, team-oriented style, a passion for medical science and health care and familiarity with philanthropic issues.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills: Bachelor's degree, ten years of fundraising experience and eight years of managing/leading a team of fundraising professionals or an equivalent combination of education,experience and expertise. An advanced degree in health sciences, business, finance, marketing, communications or a related field. Experience with grateful patient fundraising.
