Position Summary
This faculty position is a full-time 100% FTE position as a Student Success Counselor in the Division of Counseling and Matriculation located at San Jose City College.

Some workdays may be assigned outside of the ten-month academic calendar. The assignment may include day, evening and weekend responsibilities.

This position is represented by the Faculty Association Unit, AFT 6157.

Position Purpose:
This position is housed in the Metas Center and reports to the Dean of Counseling with liaison responsibilities to the Metas program. The Student Success Counselor will proactively support students by successfully implementing effective practices and initiatives that are data driven with positive measurable outcomes such as: academic counseling services, summer bridge, Peer-Led Team Learning, Supplemental Instruction, Avanzamos, one-on-one tutoring, peer facilitated math and science workshops, study skills workshops, scholarship workshops, learning communities, textbook loans, and calculator loans.

Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Develop comprehensive learning systems designed to engage students in their education and empower students to become active and responsible learners.

2. Assist with development, planning, and implementation of support services such as Summer Bridge, Peer-Led Team Learning, Supplemental Instruction, and Avanzamos.

3. Develop parent engagement orientations and activities to increase college awareness among parents of local high school students transitioning to college.

4. Collaborate with instructional faculty across disciplines in designing curriculum and support activities to increase retention and success among students in STEM and Basic Skills.

5. Provide orientations and training to faculty and peer leaders to enhance support services for Summer Bridge, Peer-Led Team Learning, Supplemental Instruction, Avanzamos, and other services under the Metas Program.

6. Provide substantial, accessible, and integrated counseling to academic courses and programs in Basic Skills and STEM such as Summer Bridge, Peer-Led Team Learning, Supplemental Instruction, and Avanzamos.

7. Participate in program planning, regular meetings with instructional faculty and staff, and program evaluation of activities

8. Act as liaison counselor to one or more academic disciplines, underprepared, academically at risk students, and the Metas Program.

9. Participate in the implementation of the District-wide student success initiative including admissions, assessment, and orientations, counseling and follow up components.

10. Utilize the district's computerized course prerequisite system and create electronic student educational plans.

11. Maintain currency and depth of knowledge in assigned area of responsibility.

12. Communicate subject matter clearly, correctly and effectively.

13. Adapt methodologies for students with special needs and different learning styles.

14. Use appropriate preparation and organizational skills in area of assignment.

15. Demonstrate commitment to professional development including but not limited to activities such as: participation in professional conferences, workshops, seminars, membership in professional organizations, research projects, publishing academic work, participation in statewide committees or organizations, etc.

16. Participate in faculty responsibilities such as: departmental duties, course and curriculum development, committees, program review, student learning outcomes and objectives, research and special projects as needed in the discipline/department or district.

17. Meet all professional responsibilities.

18. Demonstrate sensitivity in working with students of diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds, sexual orientation and disabilities.

19. Work cooperatively within the college community with students, staff, faculty and administrators.

20. Foster a professional working environment.

21. Use effective communication skills.

22. Demonstrate sensitivity to diversity, a respect for differences and the dignity of others.

23. Maintain and provide current course syllabi as required by California Education Code and Board policy.

24. Attend and participate in department, division and college meetings, within the work week, but not in conflict with the member's primary assignment.

25. Meet record keeping obligations on time, e.g., grades, census, reports, rosters, textbook orders, and requisitions.

26. Submit and maintain appropriate office hours.  
Minimum Qualifications:

1. Master's degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling

(Note: A bachelor's degree in one of the above listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist - MFT - is an alternative qualification for this discipline, pursuant to title 5, section 53410.1.)

2. Demonstrated sensitivity, knowledge, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, gender, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of the students we serve; and sensitivity to and knowledge and understanding of groups historically underrepresented, and groups who may have experienced discrimination.

3. Success integrating diversity as appropriate into the major duties outlined in the job description and in the duties listed in the District's hiring policy; or demonstrated equivalent transferable skills to do so.   
Desired Qualifications:
1. Bilingual Spanish/English fluency, both written and oral, and the ability to provide program information in both Spanish and English, is preferred.

2. Knowledge of and sensitivity to the Latino community with experience providing service to recently-immigrated Latino students.

3. Experience working with federally-funded projects.
