Information Security Officer
The University at Buffalo is seeking an Information Security Officer responsible for establishing and maintaining a University wide information risk management program to ensure that information assets are adequately protected. Position reports to VP/CIO. The role of the ISO spans the entire University at Buffalo enterprise. This position is responsible for identifying, evaluating and reporting on information security risks in a manner that meets compliance and regulatory requirements, and aligns with and supports the risk posture of the University. The ISO position requires a visionary leader with strong skills in management and a working knowledge of the information security technologies. The ISO will proactively work with units to implement practices that meet defined policies and standards for information security. He or she will also oversee a variety of IT-related risk management activities.
The ISO serves as the process owner of all ongoing activities related to the availability, integrity and confidentiality of electronic information, in compliance with the organization’s information security policies. A key element of the ISO’s role is working with executive management to determine acceptable levels of risk for the organization. The ISO must ensure that information systems are maintained in a fully functional, secure mode.
The ideal candidate is a thought leader, a consensus builder, and an integrator of people and processes. While the ISO is the leader of the security office, he or she must also be able to coordinate disparate drivers, constraints and personalities while maintaining objectivity and a strong understanding that security is just one of the activities and cannot be undertaken at the expense of the University’s ability to deliver on its goals and objectives. The ISO should have a track record of competency in the field of information security or risk management, with seven to ten years of direct experience in a significant leadership role.
