Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Insurance Supervisor, the Insurance Coordinator shall coordinate daily patient referral operations and evaluate waiver requests for the Student Health Insurance Plan, providing in-depth customer service to students with regard to a variety of insurance issues.


Must have excellent customer service skills. Must be able to work in a fast paced environment and work as a team member as well as independently.


Salary: Hourly $19.65 - $23.07

Work Schedule: 8-5, M-F

Career Position.

Although this position's schedule is M-F and during traditional work hours, weekends or non-traditional work hours may be required for special projects or busy times of the year, or when strict deadlines must be met.


Employment in this position is contingent upon successful completion of a Department of Justice (DOJ) Live Scan background check, verification and continued monitoring of licensure as it applies to the position, and successful completion of our background review or credentialing process, as appropriate to the position.


The employee must comply with OSHA, CA/OSHA, and CDC recommendations and requirements regarding vaccination and testing of healthcare employees. This includes, but may not be limited to; current hepatitis B immunizations, annual flu vaccinations, and annual tuberculosis screening. At the discretion of Student Health Center, the employee may be offered an option to sign a declination acknowledgement in lieu of receiving an annual flu vaccination.


Per the UC Ethics Briefing, the employee is responsible for reporting any and all potential conflicts of interest to their supervisor in a timely manner.


Employment at the Student Health Center is subject to all UC and UCI Student Health Center policies and procedures.

Job Description
Job Essential Function 1
Percent of Time: 75%
Problem solves with students and staff regarding a variety of complex and confusing insurance benefit and payment issues. Assists students, parents and medical providers by telephone, e-mail or in person by providing in-depth information on specific insurance plan information.
Verifies insurance eligibility for Student Health Center departments and outside medical providers.
Authorizes outside medical services and emergencies; then records authorization data in the claims system as well as reporting to the insurance carrier.
Sets up referral appointments for students at the request of Student Health Center clinicians, providing all necessary instructions to the student.
Advises students of insurance benefits, deductibles, exclusions and limitations, benefit rates and claim filing procedures.
Job Essential Function 2
Percent of Time: 20%
Processes waiver requests by comparing campus waiver criteria to private health insurance plans, checking waiver requests and private insurance plans for completeness and comparability.
Contacts private insurance plan carriers to verify that information found on the waiver request is accurate.
Utilizes campus SBS database to approve waiver requests. Verifies granted waivers via websites of contracted SHIP administrative vendors.
Notifies students regarding determination of their waiver request.

Demonstrated skill and expertise in the administration of group health insurance plan.
Ability to understand insurance billing for a variety of medical services.
Ability to analyze the many complex and confusing insurance situations that are presented to the Insurance Department.
Ability to work independently and use sound judgment to solve problems.
Knowledge of medical office procedures.
Working knowledge of medical terminology.
Strong customer service skills and ability to communicate clearly and tactfully with students, staff and all public contacts.
Ability to treat students in a respectful and caring manner while always maintaining patient confidentiality.
Excellent written and oral communication skills demonstrated in a professional manner with an excellent telephone demeanor.
Ability to formulate correspondence and ability to type letters and reports.
Detail oriented with good organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously; ability to work in a busy environment with multiple interruptions.
Accurate typing, data entry and filing skills.
Three (3) years demonstrated skill and expertise in the administration of group health insurance plan.
Ability to operate department practice management system and campus SBS system.
Ability to use insurance carrier websites to research insurance eligibility status.
Knowledge of University policies and procedures, and campus department functions.
