Ethnic Studies Instructor - Part-time Adjunct Pool


This is a pool to fill part-time instructor positions for the 2014-2015 and/or 2015-2016 academic years. The successful applicant will be expected to provide instruction in an ethnic studies course focused on the African American Experience. This assignment may include teaching at off-campus sites, day or evening classes, weekend classes, large classes, and/or distant learning, using multiple teaching methodologies.

Knowledge and Abilities:

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate that they are broadly prepared and have a depth of knowledge in the discipline. In addition, the successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the following knowledge and abilities:

• Ability to work effectively and harmoniously with colleagues in an environment that promotes innovation, teaching, learning and service to diverse student population;
• Ability to effectively work with students with a wide range motivations, academic and vocational goals who are diverse in terms of academic preparation, cultural, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds as well as physical and learning abilities;
• Ability to participate in the development of curricula, including curricula delivered via new modalities;
• Ability to participate in recruitment and articulation activities with schools, colleges and universities;
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;
• Demonstrated ability to maintain subject matter currency;
• Ability to assess student learning outcomes;
• Knowledge of computers and willingness to explore new technologies that would benefit program;
• Knowledge of and commitment to the California community college mission.

Education and Experience

Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s in the ethnic studies field
OR
Master’s in American studies/ethnicity, Latino studies, La Raza studies, Central American studies, Latin American studies, cross cultural studies, race and ethnic relations, Asian-American studies, or African-American studies
OR
Interdisciplinary studies:
Master’s degree in the interdisciplinary area
OR
Master’s degree in one of the disciplines included in the interdisciplinary area and upper division or graduate course work in at least one other constituent discipline
OR
- The equivalent. Certain combinations of education, experience, and other accomplishments in the field may be judged as equal to the stated minimum qualifications for these positions. Candidates who feel they possess such equivalent qualifications must request and submit an APPLICATION FOR EQUIVALENCE form. Supporting documents must be included with the completed form.

AND – A demonstrated sensitivity to students with diverse academic, socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds and students with disabilities.
